I am trying out toltrazuril for the first time. I just ordered it from horseprerace. It is 200ml liquid 5%. what is the dosing per pound? Is it squirted down the throat or in their water?

I have used Sulfa drugs for years and am tired of how long it has to be used and the cocci comes back someitmes. Plus it makes their water less desirable for them and the last thing we want are dehydrated puppies in this heat. I hope the toltrazuril is a better choice.

Thanks for responses.

If it's like Ponazuril, then it only takes a tiny amount to be effective for dogs.   I had a tube of Ponazuril paste I used for my dogs, for my GSDs I would squeeze out a one-inch line to dose each dog.  My understanding is there are some over-dosing risks of this medication with canines, so be careful, I don't know how much of an overdose it would take to cause issues.

I would take Ponazuril any day over albon and other anti-protozoa meds for dogs.  I didn't take the time to look up Toltrazuril and see how closely it is to Ponazuril.   Sorry, my post isn't very helpful.

It is 0.1cc per lb per what I have written down and that is what I have used. Advise came from here. You need a 1cc syringe to measure accurately and a scale. It goes in their mouth but don't squirt it down their throat, they can aspirate.  It appears some people have done it weekly from 2 to 5 weeks. again what I have written down. I have done it no more than twice and started it at week 5.

I could not find dosing...  That concerns me---do you feel it is really safe?

Google Baycox dosage for dogs.

We've used it in over half a dozen litters (GSD and AB) and haven't had an issue or bad reaction.

You can find dosing info here: http://www.capcvet.org/capc-recommendations/coccidia

If you are using the 0.5% solution (the bottle from horseprerace.com), the dose is either 0.2 ml per kg every day for 3 days; 0.4 ml per kg 2 days in a row, or 0.6 ml/kg in a single (one day) dose. That works out to about 0.1 ml per pound (or 0.5 ml per 5 pounds) at the lowest (3 days in a row) dose.
