The same controversy over supplements, that goes on here, also occurs on all the top performance human athletic, and body building boards.
One group of athletes believe that, supplements are over hyped and over priced. They believe supps do little if anything at all. The other group swears by their supplements and would never be without them. Who is right? In essence, both are!
The one thing all agree on is the need for PROTEIN. Muscle consists mainly of two proteins, actin and myosin. The turnover rate of amino acids in these proteins is high, and increases upon stimulation, i.e. exercise. If the muscle is worked to maximum effort, as is the case of hard working canines, turnover is extremely high. Hence, there is a large demand from the canine body's pool of all amino acids.
The human athletes who do not use supps, spend their entire day eating. They need, 2-4g of protein per kg bodyweight, of high quality protein.The intake must be staggered throughout the day at regular intervals. The supp crowd, prefer to slam down a whey protein and creatine shake, and go about their life.
To see improvement in your canine by using supps, you should work him. Be it human or canine, the harder an athlete trains, the more benefit they will get from supps and high quality protein, and the more they will need the extra nutrition.
I believe that a hard working canine, should get a minimum of 2grams of quality Protein, per lb of bodywt. These feedings should be staggered at regular intervals, as only so many grams of protein can be used from one feeding. How you feed this needed protein is up to you.
Do Supplements work? YES Can I get by without supps, if I feed enough high quality protien and food? YES
