I was watching a National AKC show and when the top GSD came on stage and I was shocked. It appears that the US took the SV standard and twisted it. This dog had a sloping topline that resembles a SV GSD when it is tracking-pulling, but the dog was standing there unstacked. It looked like almost a two or three inch drop from the withers to the hips without the dog being stacked at all. When the dog was stacked the line was so exaggerated that I wondered how it could stand up. No wonder there are so many problems. Besides the obvious differences in breeding regulations what are the differences between the two and how do we fix them?
This topic is THE argument between the GSD AKC oldtimers and the international crowd. It is acrimonious, emotional and subjective on both sides. It is a waste of time to discuss it because both sides are deaf and are convinced they are 100% correct. If you relish arguments cum discussions that can go on for several life-times, you have asked the right question.
Maxislooking I don't beleive you have the you know whats to ask a question like that, you never cease to amaze me.You keep on watching your National AKC events and campaing your long coated German Shepherds and you might as well throw the all white shepherd in there also.Keep on wondering why we should go by one standard written buy just one guy over 100years ago.Your batting a thousand in my book....lol....
So i take it, this is one of those topics to just "ignore"? lol i have my opinion on SOME AKC Am Breds, but NOT all. There are some really nice Am Breds that really are a functioning working dog. Their temperament isnt any less than a good temperament German dog. There sure are plenty of spooks and hock walking, a$$ draggin Am Breds, BUT again, there are some DEDICATED Am Breds trying to get some stuff back. The "correct" Am Bred is doing herding and doing it well I might add. They are doing SAR, OB, Agility etc... and healthy as ox. Its just those bad ones are REALLY bad. I have no problem saying.. i like a mix of the two, adding some german to the sound temperament Am Bred without all that junk dragging across the ground. As a matter of fact.. i have one most folks start in Am Bred and venture out... been very very lucky with mine... been very very lucky with my german girls... and one day i will venture into those workin dawgs too :)
Regards,
Dawnmarie
What's there to fix? They are two distinct breeds. I don't see how you can "fix" that breed and bring it back into standard with the "German Shepherd" breed. Let's just accept it as two seperate breeds, and that eleminates the argument.
I personally feel that the GSD has two different varieties, and much of the general public has no clue. If there is a way to "fix" the problem the German/European breeding philosophy would have to become as popular and widespread as the AKC here in America. If a VA rated German bred GSD cant win an AKC show it sounds like theres a problem.
Actually GSDfan, there are 3 separate breeds within the breed. AmCan lines, Euro showlines, and working lines.
Someone was talking about having the stones to say it? I said it.
Anyone need any further convincing should watch the Canadian SS on video (I have the link saved should any want to view it but don't know where to look) and if they can still stand it, go to a local AKC show and see what gets entered.
Mike, you too are missing the point There is only the original breed standard, any others are shit, Don't matter if your talking AKC
Sorry, but I didn't miss anything. And I don't see where Max said he/she approved of what was seen at the AKC Nationals. Nor did I say anything about approving of the differences. Also, whites and coats have been in the breed since the beginning, sometimes recessives pop up (yep, it's true, 2 black & tans can produce a coat or a while). Also, there's only ONE of those versions that I feel is true to the standard and I'll give you a hint or two: they don't usually come in black & red, they don't have over angulated rears, they can actually work! But you would've got that had you paid attention to what I said, rather than trying to put into it what you wanted to read.
Mike, no need to sorry, I'm not trying to put anything anywhere.........You made a statement....an incorrect one, I corrected you, no big deal. You go by your standards and I'll go by the Sv's standards. As for the coated and whites being around since the beginning your are correct, and in the old german standards both would had been culled at birth If you want to be the night in shinning armour for Maxi, go back and read her prior posts.I stand by my post, sorry if you were offended, that was not my intent I need not have you point out the breed standard, I am aware of it
