hi, i have a question,i've tried all kinds of food on my dogs, since purina up to canine royal with not good results, it seems to work for a while but then they went back to same condition, skiny and lack of energy,a friend of mine that is a butcher told me to give them raw bone shavings and i stared doing it, since then my dogs looks beautiful, shiny coats and full of energy, how bad it's to feed them raw food, could that affect their behavior? thanks for your help

Feeding raw is not bad at all for most dogs. The biggest problem is that it can be very confusing for someone starting out. You can search on here for raw or raw feeding and look up many old topics about this.

Graywolf, You do not provide very much information, but, based on your trying various foods and your description of the dog being skinny and having a lack of energy, I wonder if your dog does not have some sort of malabsorption problem. Please provide more information and perhaps we can make additional suggestions. For example, how old is your dog? What are his stools like? How often does he need to defecate? When was the last time he/she was wormed, checked for tapeworm or other parasites? We have repeately discussed this topic on this board and there are things that can be done. If there is some sort of problem it is likely that the dog will need something else besides shaved bone.

I was in a similar situation with one of my dogs. He would not eat kibble. I tried ALL of the premium brands. He might eat it for one or two meals, but then back to the same old sticking his nose up. He would go for up to 4 days refusing to eat!! It was making me crazy! A friend of mine said I should try him on raw. I was leary of course, but it worked like a charm! He gobbled it down like a starving beast. I have a receipe that I can give you to make a complete diet if you like. I have no proof, but looking back I think he had an enzyme problem. Kibble is lacking in many essential enzymes. That was years ago and since then I have done much study into why it works and why there are not the same dangers that we humans would face if we were eating raw. 1) Dog do not digest their food in the same way as humans. a) The food stays in their stomach for a very long time. 6-12 hours! This allows for a long acid bath of all food ingested. Essentially killing most of the bad stuff. As compared to our stomach only an hour or two. b) The food goes through their intestines very quickly. This is good for raw as it does not allow for firmentation to take hold. As opposed to our system, which it stays in our intestines a very long time allowing for massive firmentation. 2) Raw bones are soft and pliable

Graywolf I have been feeding a mostly RAW diet for over 2 years now and all my dogs seem to have benefit from it. It is a "deep" subject that you can find alot of info on. Recently this web site was posted: http://rawdogranch.com/ and it gives alot of easy to understand info. Leerburg also has alot of info and sells supplements, here is an example weekly schedule for dogs: http://www.leerburg.com/diet2.htm. In answer to your question, I do not think RAW is bad or adding fresh food to your dogs diet, dogs can get sick on bad meat but they can get sick on bad dog food too.

cont... ... in comparison to cooked bones. Cooked bones are very dangerous for a dog to eat. There are many other informative articles on the benifits of feeding raw, as well as natural suppliments you can buy on the site. http://b-naturals.com/default.php If you do nothing else look up the articles and read them. She also answers any questions you may have by email or phone. Her credentials are on the page also. Hope this helps! Debby

Raw food is a dogs natural diet. Anything else is less desirable. Nearly all kibbled foods are inadequate for proper canine nutrition. Fortunately in the last 15 years there has been an explosion of raw foods available frozen. There are other super premium foods that are dry bagged and so are more convenient. The major difference is in the quality and density of nutrients. Kibbled foods are mostly filler (corn, rice, wheat, soybeans, etc...). The canine digestive tract is not set up to efficiently process these foods. With a more nutrient dense diet you will also feed less, clean up less waste, have fewer issues with allergies, have better joint health, and fewer digestive disturbances, as well as greater longevity due to the reduced load on the organs to process all of the excess filler.
