Vast increases in personality disorders, autism spectrum disorders, mild fetal alcohol syndrome and damage to fetuses from a mother's drug use, revolving door legal systems also contribute directly. Many have noticed a major problem with excessive speed of drivers and carelessness driving, perhaps due to cars that are quieter and ride much better with folks often driving faster than they can control them.
In my area most police officers are killed by unfortunate car accidnts, many of which are linked to careless drivers, speeding, not paying attention or under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Excessive speed kills and those who drive the speed limit are passed by the majority who race by them at speeds typically 10-15 mph over on the highway and 10-15 mph overon the side streets. Then when they get the ticket they deserve for speeding they blame the police officer and are mad. In my area police only patrol for speed heavily after a serious accident has occurred due to excessive speed.
Some experts have linked increased juvenile delinquency which leads to higher rates of adult repeat criminals overall to lack of authority exercised to discipline children in the homes dues to absent or passive fathers, and absent working mothers, and schools unable to exercise proper authority due to the new emphasis on diversity and political correctness. In my public schools, perversity is taught as completely normal. Many teachers say they have little control of the Jr. High and HS classrooms and unhelpful parents.
We live in a large highly differentiated complex society where many families are broken and divided, adequate discipline is nonexistent for many, and police and courts get stuck serving as parental discipline substitutes which should not be their primary job. The breakdown of the family and society in general is a complex problem which tends to be accompanied by increasing rates of crime, violent career criminals, gangs and increased risk to police officers. Many families are overscheduled and in a big rush and do not manage their children effectively or discipline them adequately. Fatherless homes are always a huge factor in delinquency rates and are growing in numbers daily. Many cities are bankrupt and do not have enough money to hire enough police, my city is short 700. An increase in the number of well trained and wellselected police that are healthy mentally, followed by progressive models of community policing where the police are involved at a community level is believed by experts to decrease delinquency and crime and result in faster closure of open cases due to community input.

Slamdunc, at your request I will not post on this thread due to respect for your profession. I had no intention of spoiling this thread but since this discussion touched on some areas that I have been involved in I wanted to share what I had learned of the factors that contribute to needless deaths of police officers. For whatever reasons my post appeared to offend you which is not my intention. But I will abstain from further posting on this subject line to keep you fromfeeling uncomfortable. I was posting to share what I had learned while working on a govt funded research project on the criminal justice system I was involved in for the National Institute of Mental Health. What I did learn about broad rates of deviance which eventually makes contact with the police and courts systems is that such is determined by many factors we had to identify and measure. I summarized much of what we found, but my mention of traffic accidents causing officer deaths was extra and was not part of the project. I don't believe any experts have collated the overall effects of illegals on officer deaths in the line of service yet, but it could out to be significant.
