It's difficult to tell at a glance the difference between a dog or coyote, that's why I use a bright orange collar on any of my dogs when I have them loose with me. I don't want some poacher in our woods shooting my dog, and then claim they thought it was a coyote. Already had a poacher shoot a black and white, blue eyed paint horse of mine, while the horse was standing at his feed tub waiting for me to feed him at eight in the morning. The sobs will shoot anything that breaths, just to be able to hear the bang from their rifle, I guess.

Even if they look similar a coyote moves differently.
I've know people mean enough to shoot a horse, they'd shoot a dog even quicker, but they are not hunters, they do it for pure meaness.
And sometimes it's personal, or at least they think so.
Poachers are generally trying not to draw attention to themselves.
Sorry about the horse.

We have a big den of coyotes back behind me. I have never seen them but I hear them sing at night. The dogs never have any reaction other than perking their ears up and listening. It's almost like they know they are different and it's better just to leave them alone. Same way with wolves on tv--it's as I said like they know. They lay and listen but that's all ...................

Moons, thanks.
I know the two move differently, but I'm talking about poachers who don't care what they shoot. If they claim they thought one my dogs was a coyote, an orange collar would make it hard for them to explain.
As for the bastard who shot my horse, he was a friend of the police chief, so nothing was done about it. The guy was leasing adjacent property and was almost at our house when he shot my horse. Very clear that he was not on hunting property. If he'd missed my horse, the bullet probably would have hit the house. I don't know the guy, never had any dealings with him, he just wanted to shoot something, and my horse was convenient.
Horses get shot a lot during deer season. The morons can't tell the difference...one idiot shot a horse out from under a little girl riding it, in SC.

They do so much damage when they are rabid.
Police shoot fox after it bites 3 people.

Vonissk,
my dogs act a bit differently when they hear the coyotes, they know exactly what they are.
They know the smell as well, and they have lines around the property that coyotes are not allowed to cross.
This year I have a new problem, a Bobcat is in the area.
Dunno how that's gonna work out yet.
Joanro,
all I can say is someone was accountable even if the law did nothing, least that's how I'd look at it.
There are idiots even in the woods, you hear about accidents far too often.
Brush poppers we call em, and they're almost always tourists, outta towners.
Besides being dangerous they leave trash behind, burns my ass, I have a time or two confronted such individuals in the past.
I've seen two rabid animals in my life, one was a dog, the other a skunk, I'd rather pick up a rattle snake.
