Excuse me SB
BUT I was in a restaurant with over 30 workers last night and all of them in the kitchen had my full attention...the WONGS OWN the largest chinese ORIENTAL restaurant in their town also.
THEY speak for the CHINESE that the topic of this thread was about...NOT philipino!
Oriental people are of the region of CHINA and the other Mongolia and such listed as called ORIENTAL.
i DID NOT ask any Philipino people...
THE thread is about the YEAR OF the DRAGON
ORIENTAL PEOPLE in vast numbers last night told me no problem...reread my post....THE CHEN family owns 4 restaurants in Texas..THE mother of this large family can sure enough speak for CHINA people...
I hope your boss isnt reading .....A lot of companies do not allow dating among employees
Bty: SB I have been in Management of many companies here in TEXAS AND owned one of the largest companines in my town and county, and worked in lots of venues, and I have never seen or heard of anyone I have come in contact with over 49 years of employing and hiring and working both men and women...any of the chinese, mongolian, Tawainese and smaller countries included in the Oriental People list, who have deemed being called an ORIENTAL as offensive.
Asian people yes, they want to be called Asian if they are from Asian countries commonly called Asian.
I have never ever had a problem of worry about what I call someone. I do not go around saying to every person I meet or talk to or about "
Hey are you offended if I call you Oriental or Asian or African or Jewish??? WHY does it make you so offended Ninja said Oriental... Are you ORIENTAL?

YR - I am saying going one place and talking to people there doesn't mean they speak for everyone. As I said, some will find it offensive.
I used Philipino as an example as in general when you don't know the ethnic backgroudn of someone Asian is the general term.
It is good to hear that in your contact with people in Texas no one "seemed" offended. That is the thing, sometimes people maybe offended and may not just say anything. I have lived in numerous states and have a majority of Asian friends and if you don't know their specific ethnicity (japanese, chincese, etc) they (those i know very well) prefer Asian.
Good to know that you don't go to people and ask them that. To each his own and use whatever you want as we are all grown. Slamdunc gave a great description of both terms.

I am not basing my facts on one place. I attend the second largest church in Texas and we have an ORIENTAL CHURCH we sponsor here and there are three in Houston.
I am retired from 4 venues., and for many places I have traveled, including to Europe, with a group of people who included Orientals and my travels and even last year at Hutto in schutzhund we have men and women who are from China and the surrounding countries..
I am not basing my opinion on one person..I am in my sixties and have lots of years under my belt in my experiences with Orientals, Asians and all ethenic people, from my Fashion world where I was in touch with many vendors who sold me their Garments, and items , and the dog world, the automotive world and the years I was in ABWA, traveled to many conventions and being vice Pres of Gal Co . Christian endeavor, we had church groups of Oriental young people ...
I use to do extemporanus speaking at UTMB in Galveston, texas to many of the groups of young men and women from CHINA and I lectured on A Lady and her CAR....(owner of one of the largest independent Automotive shops) and I also lectured on How to pack for Travel ( manager of local Fashion Boutigue in the Galvez Mall..
So , you see, Sirius I have mega experience with PEOPLE> That WAS my position in all my venues, to manage and to hire, to groom you for your job and to fire and to promote Christian virtue in a world of mucho people...spanish and Oriental , asian and many more too long a list to mention
Offensive can be calling anyone anything if they chose to be offended. Rude and ugle terms and unkind and inappropriate putdowns are the only titles I deem offensive. I have no insecurity of calling me a caucausian or a TEXAN and I call my parents Yankees.. THEY were born up NORTH...I am the only Texan born to them...no offense either way..
This is a good topic to discuss but I am thru...
No offense
