Thanks for getting the thread back on topic Mudwick!  Good stuff that you posted.  I have a friend who works at our DSS.  She's a wonderful person.  Good luck with your career endeavors; it is not always easy to decide which route to take, but in the end, I'm sure it will all work out for you.

Preston,
Never fear, I will think what I want.  : )

It's not all abuse/neglect, but just children allowed to do whatever they want to do.  No limits. They are given things they don't earn, suffer no consequeces for their actions and demand (and receive) attention when they want it.
They grow up into adults continuing the same behaviors.

So true Shadylady!  I see it all of the time; I teach at a private school and most of my students are from very wealthy families and they are very spoiled.  Many of them think the world revolves around them because their parents treat them like royalty.

Does anyone else besides me when meeting a new family, neighbor, friends of friends try to check out their dogs and based on that impression start your base line of what you think of that family and it's structure....

for example, my daughter went to school with a girl who lived on the other side of the block, but after meeting their family and seeing that every 3 seconds someone was screaming:
"put Molly (dog, possibly lab mix) out"..
"can someone put Molly out"..
"Molly get off!" ..
"Molly NO! you cant jump on company",
and than
"Hi, how are you, so you are Sashas mom, so nice....Molly GET OFF!!!"...
" Oh, she is just so excited when we have visitors"....
"OMG! Molly NO! you can't pee in here!!!...Brian, get the dog, no, no get the dog!"...
"oh, for god's sake can someone wipe that pee puddle?"...
"Anyways, we are Sadie and Brian, so nice to meet you, Jessicas parents..it's so nice of you to stop by, Jessica told us so much about your daughter"...
"Molly!, Molly! stop barking...shut up..Molly PLEASE! we got company!"...

we left shortly after.......lets just say, my daughter was not allowed to stay in their house, Jessica had to come to ours, and parents never became friends.....Jessica was terrified of Molly, apparently Jessica who weight half of Molly size was routinely knocked over when she dashed from kitchen to her room or bathroom.....so yeah...

I look at family dog and I think, if parents cant control their pet dog...there is no way they will control their kids, and if kids have no manners, no structure, no rules what can we expect them to become...and so the vicious circle begins...and you know those kids become parents and it only gets worse from there...mental issues, control issues, rebellion from "thats how my parents did, and I will not be them" and they swing 180 degree just to become exactly what they hated....being in medical field its scary what is out there, walking among us...i avoid psych unit as much as possible...

So, I'm wondering, if certain types of careers have more people with NPD.  I apologize if anyone here is in one of these careers since I don't like stereotyping and I'm NOT saying you are a narcissist.  But, here's what I found:

Computer professionals:

Leaders (CEOs, military, political, religious, etc.):  http://www.maccoby.com/Articles/NarLeaders.shtml

elebrities:  http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2008/11/celebrities_and_narcissism.html

C
an you think of other professions where there are more narcissistic personalities?

So true Ladyfrost! Those people should not have dogs or children!  How about this kind: the mother of one of my students comes into the school almost every day with her little "something poo" on her arm and is constantly talking to the dog and about the dog.  Needless to say both kid and dog are spoiled rotten!  Then, I also have students who have dogs that go to doggy day care every day even when the mom stays at home and doesn't work.  Of couse these are the same students who complain to me that they haven't been to their beach house in awhile because they are having it redecorated so they have to put up with going to the lake house more!

I worked with a narcissist and I wouldn't have wished her on anyone. I personally do not think that being spoiled has as much to do with this behavior as I do a parent not building a healthy self esteem in the child. The girl I worked with had NO self esteem even though she was what we would call a accomplished (on the outside) person. On the inside she was a mess.

And this is an honest question but how many police were former military? After working with military personnel, I found many of the guys act "larger than life" forgetting that we on the outside of military life don't follow the same rules and some of them IMO needed some humbling.  Yet they are asked to shoot at the "enemy of the moment" Its a strange contrast to live IMO and since recruiting is done when the individual is young and impressionable, how does this affect the person as they age? I will never forget a fighter pilot I met that was in his 60's. sad

I was shocked to see so many schizophrenics in the military.
