I can't judge another parents' reasons for wanting to keep a brain dead child on a ventilator but I am guessing they love her very much.  As for the hospital, well no surgery is ever "simple".  Not that mistakes can't be made.  As for brain dead, that means the brain is dead, the brainstem is not functioning and the machines are keeping the body oxygenated.  The brainstem controls autonomic functions such as body temperature regulation, heart beat, and respiratory function.  Brain dead means this most primitive part of the brain has ceased working and will not restart because tissue death in the brain itself has occurred and those tissues will not spontaneously regenerate.  In a brain death, the heart can continue to beat, although very feebly, for a few seconds after respiration has ceased.  The procedures for assessing brain death such as electrical activity are much more accurate and error proof than say for cardiac arrest.  Brain dead is the defining test to pronounce someone dead and the hospital has the right to shut the machines off, but in this case, the hospital chose to continue life support to allow the parents time to come to terms with their child's death and I don't believe race was an issue.  I believe it was concern and empathy as well as respect for the wishes of Jahi's parents who have to come to the most difficult realization a parent ever has to make, that their child is gone.

As for Terri Schiavo, her case was different, she was in a persistent vegetative state which is totally different than brain death.  Her brain still had electrical activity which Jahi McMath's does not have.

I feel for the parents, how horrible to have to experience the death of a child.

GSD if you want something that really is hotly debated but never in the news, it is the parents' lack of rights when it comes to determining whether their terminally ill child should continue or even start painful and debilitating medical treatments and/or surgery with no guarantee of prolonging life more than a few months to a year.  If parents decide to refrain from these treatments in favor of quality of life, their rights are legally terminated and given over to a guardian ad litem (who usually is affiliated with the hospital) for the duration of the child's treatment regime.  Even an adolescent is not allowed to make these decisions about their own health.  These children are forced to undergo chemo, surgery, and other treatments against their wishes.

And, nothing. I didn't write any of this I posted it and made a comment and that is it. Personably I think this is each parents own decision to make, not the hospitals or government.

"Hospitals love to sweep their f^^k ups under the carpet, and turn the attention to whatever will cause people to forget they are at fault."

The problem in my opinion is that society has the WRONG idea about the medical field!!,,"practicing medicine",,,ring a bell?,,Also, no matter what leaps and bounds science has made in the field of medicine, we are ONLY humans!!,,I think society has a extremely unrealistic expectation of it,,,,If you want a "guarantee" that a simple tonsillectomy will turn out as expected, you're a fool,,There are no such guarantees !!,,,s@8! happens!!!!"

"Their latest ploy is charge you for an ambulance ride, admit you, then tell you they can't help you, charge you for that, and bill you even more for a helicopter flight to a real hospital, all the while you go without real medical attention and spend four hours being billed and shuffled around."

"ploy"...Roll eyes,,,,Seriously, the average person who walks into a medical facility thinks they have arrived at the Hilton Grand Hotel !!!,,lol,,,,Give me a break!!,,Its a medical facility and contrary to popular belief you are NOT the only one in the building,,,geesh!!,,,

It's alright, the thumbs really mean nothing to me... makes some think their opinion actually matters I guess.
I wouldn't take my dog to our local hospital, I meant it when I said they have a reputation, it's not just my opinion but fact.

Maybe saying your full of shit was a bit too strong, your just misguided.

True story a local hospital x-rayed my wife's wrist and told her it was okay the only problem was she had bent her thumb back and was complaining of pain in the thumb and not the wrist.

My youngest son almost died at birth because of idiots in the hospital, and that was supposed to be one of the better ones.
