Interesting article BE4U, apparently the researchers found that miRNA from GMOs have been found in tissues of both animals and humans. The miRNAs are binding to various receptors of the genes and causing mutations and alterations in how the genes are expressed. GMO genetic material seems to alter mammalian genetics. Now that is frightening. But here is something else..... It has already been decided that genes can be patented in plants and animals, that anything with those patented gene markers becomes intellectual property of the patent holder. But what happens when the patented genetic material is found in non-engineered animals, and humans?
The super frightening fight (to me because of the slippery slope) is going on right now in the Supreme Court called Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc. It is over the patenting of human genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 used in diagnostic tests to estimate cancer risk. At issue is whether the "products of nature" can be treated as human made inventions and become exclusive property of the patent holder while Myriad argues that the genes are not as they occur in nature but exist after isolation from tissue. Keep in mind isolating genetic material from the body does not mean it is a new existence (I have a brilliant geneticist friend who works exclusively with human genes). Also when you have blood draw at the hospital or diagnostics lab, you have given consent to have the testing done and the genetic material is no longer yours, so if you happen to have a unique gene, does your genetic make-up belong to you or can a company patent your unique genes? (Yes there is a Robin Cook book on this and it is a sobering read on the future of genetics and what actually belongs to the individual).
