Come to think of it, why can't utilities measure my power usage on their computers they way the phone company knows my phone records without coming to my house?!

Because with the phone companies your individual telephone line is seperate. The Telephone Switching Office is actually a huge computer and can be programmed to do anything they want.

The Electric companies sends out power that every user is hooked up to on the same source. The only way to measure your usage is a meter right at your house, same with the water department, and natural gas.

In my area the meters are anything but accurate, and you can't dispute it with the utility.
These meters can identify the devices using the electricity.
The health concerns I dunno.

The arrests bothered me especially the lady filming.

But hey, we want that kind of control in our lives don't we?

When I had a problem with my utility I told them they could take their pole, transformer, and meter with them and they became a little more cooperative.

That would be the only out, do without their electricity, some do it everyday with wind and solar systems.

They own the equipment, not the property.

They own the equipment but someplace in their agreements they have the right to come on your property to check their equipment. So, are you saying that the meter knows if the electricity is being used by say a well pump, waterbed heater or a light? I find that hard to believe. I will have to do some research on that speck of info.

BTW, the smart meters can communicate with SOME newer appliances and do not know what else is using the power in your home.

They know the device type, size, like any volt amp meter,  that's not new technology.

I can't find any info on that feature of smart meters. No, matter I believe you, I just never knew that they could do those things.

The main thing is it's their equipment, you don't like it then you'd have to do without it and find an alternative which isn't impossible.

"with the phone companies your individual telephone line is seperate. The Telephone Switching Office is actually a huge computer and can be programmed to do anything they want."

Actually, I have an individual power line to my house, just like my land phone line, not to mention no lines at all for my cell phone, and an account number for each utility.  Admin, you can ""ugh" all you want, but I bet someone could figure a way to measure electricity usage without a meter on the house.  This "smart meter" just made someone alot of money replacing all the old meters when there is probably technology out there that could replace meters entirely.

And Bee, competition is always a good thing.  Rates become competitive, and if rates are fixed by some supplier, multiple companies compete by providing different service options, one of which could be a keeping one's old meter if that's what people want.  Estimates are not good if they are your only option.  However, many people choose to keep their payments the same every month all year.  If this payment method is more convenient than fluctuating bills for actual usage, people may be willing to pay a little more initially for this service.  It could also be an alternative to having any meter on your house.  But again with just one company, it's "take what we offer or leave it."

If your friend leaves something at your house, then you have a disagreement and you tell him not to come on your property even to pick up his stuff, your ex-friend would probably have to come back with a court order and the law to pick up his item .  So, if this situation is similar, I can see why the police were involved.  If the owners refused the meter replacement, that should be the end of their service and time for a generator pending solar panels, again options for people with money on hand.  Do you think they can't legally shut the power off because of the weather or other public safety issues?

It will be interesting to see how this works out.

They could mount the smart meter on the pole, but that would be impractical IMO.

Your cell phone and land line are seperate from other lines, seperate line all the way back to office on the land line, different frquency on the cellphone line.

A smart meter has the capapility of turning off the electricity to your house via computer during high usage periods.  And yes the power company has the right to come on to you property to work on, read, adjust their equipment.
