I never thought narcissim was a personality disorder.  Many that act like they are the b-all do so to cover up their insecurities and it is pretty obvious.
The ones that actually do stand above the rest are usually humble and great people, I guess because they have nothing to prove.

Interesting. :)

All human beings have *traits* of personality disorders, some more than others.

The problem with news outlets reporting on scientific research is the oversimplification.
Being narcissistic, or sometimes behaving in a narcissistic manner, doesn't mean a person has NPD, any more than occassionally having a hard time paying attention in a meeting means you have ADHD.

Hi Preston,
How perfect that you also popped in.  You wrote in your infinite wisdom:

"A fair number of police officers and others in authority who start out near normal drift into the sociopathic type and develop chemical dependency due to their prescribed role and ther stresses brought to bear on them and lack of effective correction applied initially as the problem develops. And some just can't handle power, it goes to their head over time."

This would be my response to you but you said it so well.  I'll just quote you:

"Armchair diagnoses and contemplation of etiology from those uneducated and unqualified in such matters is mere speculation and often pop psychology. It carries no weight and is often wrong"

My armchair diagnosis of  people who post conspiracy theories ad nauseam on a dog forum would be the ramblings of a creeping tyranny of a manic depressive, passive aggressive, narcissistic individual.  But, what do I know I'm not a psychologist.  I do deal with people with personality disorders on a daily basis, but that doesn't make me very qualified.  Just a guess.

Slamdunc, I imagine you see all types of personality disorders on a daily basis.

Mudwick, what type of mental health profession are you interested in?

ggturner,
I see a surprising amount on the alphabet forum.

I see a lot of people with all kinds of emotional and mental issues.  It seems that the self medication with drugs and alcohol intensifies their problems.

Hi Deanna,
waves back at you.

Here's a quiz/test you can actually use to see if you or someone you know is a narcissist:

Preston - site your source for the claim "A fair number of police officers and others in authority who start out near normal drift into the sociopathic type and develop chemical dependency due to their prescribed role and ther stresses brought to bear on them and lack of effective correction applied initially as the problem develops".  I am rather curious, I am currently writing a research paper on firefighters and perceived social support as a mediator of stress.    Your source may be interesting and I am extrapolating a bit of data from police into this paper.

Also, most clinical and research psychologists still believe that nature and nurture are equally important in development.  As my genetisist friend states, just because you have the genes, doesn't mean you will get it, environment plays a huge role in gene expression.  Now many drug companies would love us to believe that everything is genetic, it's no ones' fault, and you have to take a pill to be able to function in society with your "genetically driven" behavior.

Mindhunt,
I really don't believe Preston can cite a "real source." I think that was one of his passive aggressive jabs at me.  Or perhaps I am just a narcissist, in thinking that.
