On my "doggy garage sale " list, a lady advertised some old 1979-80 ScH magazines. WooHoo yes yes I got them today. Haven't read any articles but paged through a couple. OK one I looked at had an Am Ch that was a German dog--here is his pedigree--http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=395776-atlas-vom-trutzberg He is on the back cover and is also ScH 2, Bundesieger, Holland Sieger, Belgium Sieger, Am and Canadian Chs.
The next one is http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=463734-amigo-vom-land-der-berge. I'm sorry you guys I don't know how to make those clickable. And then the famous Neuman's Jim---Carmen gave him a 5 point major to finish. And also in this particular issue--ScH USA Nov-Dec 1979. were some pics in the back at a trial and there was an Am sl girl working her butt off.................My mentor is on some kind of gsd show list and she forwards them to me. The hot topic lately has been Am SL and ScH...................the only thing I am going to say is one of the oldtimes in the breed to a Covey Tucker Hills Ch to a ScH club--the trainer liked him so much that he wanted to put a title on him.
I said all that to say this? What the hell happened here? I mean now a german working line wouldn't make it to first base in the AKC ring and neither would an Am sl in ScH. It's really sad..............I'm really asking because I didn't come in the breed until 86 and hell knew nothing for at least 10 years.....................LOL..............Thanks in advance.................

Vonissk, Amigo's handler is Jimmie Moses. Jimmie learned to handle the breed in Germany.

Thanks and I did think that was a very young Jimmie Moses.

Neumann's Jim
SCHH3 FH3 KÖR 6546/54 is a son of Don - which is a DDR dog sold when the wall fell - this is not an American bred dog............. So I am not sure what the title is about on this thread - please give more detail on what you are talking about "what happened? What am I missing?Yogie

Yes you are correct that Jim was a DDR dog, etc. But he was also an American CH. I know the DDR dogs and the German wl dogs are 2 different lines, but compared to the Am SL, they are assimilar..............Those lines of dogs wouldn't even be given a second look in today's show ring. And on the flip side of the coin most clubs rarely welcome Am sl.............so I am wondering when all the things I am talking about changed and why? I understand the German history and the Martin Bros. etc etc..............But how did things change so much in THIS country?

by vonissk on 13 September 2013 - 19:09
Add on....most ScH clubs rarely etc..................

In looking at this line - I wouldnt call him a American line - Yes he was a champion - but I think this dog would be a point that started a line which might branch off from a DDR dog - that might have gone to american lines depending on the breedings........but there are so many dogs that people advertise 100% ddr from this ron line .that go in the other direction...... ..........So I am still not understanding where you are going with this......please explain?

I can't explain it any more than I already have. None of the dogs I referred to were American lines period whicj is part of the point I am trying to make and/or question I am trying to ask..........

What she's saying is how come these dogs were given championships and ribbons in the American ring, when they were European dogs. And how come these same dogs/lines wouldn't even get a second glance in the same show ring today?
We all know what happened with the Martin brothers, and the German show line/working line split. What exactly happened here that made the German dogs completely unwelcome in the American ring?
Personally, I'd blame the Martin brothers a little bit for that, too. One thing that just WILL NOT fly in the American show ring is any sort of a roached back. The second thing that happened was the American dogs started to get more and more angulation, and a longer and longer upper thigh. The German and DDR dogs just could not compete with the American SL's spectacular trot. It was like trying to judge apples and oranges!
