You know by today's standards none of us was supposed to ever make it.
HIGH SCHOOL -- 1957 vs. 2012
 
Scenario 1:
Jack goes duck hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
 
2010 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counsellors called in for traumatized students and teachers.
 
Scenario 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
 
2010 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.
 
Scenario 3:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
 
2010 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.
 
Scenario 4:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbour's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
 
2010 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.
 
Scenario 5:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.
 
2010 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.
 
Scenario 6:
Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
 
2010 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.
 
Scenario 7:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1957 - Ants die.
 
2010 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.
 
Scenario 8:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
 
2010 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

Yup it is a problem but then on the other hand

Scenario 1
Martha is beaten by her husband because she didn't have his dinner ready when he came home

1957 - Martha is told it was her fault for not being a good wife, to try harder to please her husband, she is beaten again and again until she ends up in the hospital and then the morgue

2012 - Husband is arrested for domestic assault and the message is sent that it is not ok to beat up spouses

Scenario 2
Johnny is sexually molested by an adult from the family's church

1957 - Johnny is told to stop making things up for attention, people in the church don't do those kinds of things and Johnny receives a spanking for lying. He becomes depressed and commits suicide

2012 - Johnny is taken seriously and the adult is investigated, it is found that this person has done this numerous times in the past with other children and a pedophile is taken off the streets

Scenario 3
Sue wakes up in a strangers apartment with no memory of what happened and her clothes are in a pile on the floor, a severe headache and pain in other parts.

1957 - Sue is told that she asked for it because of how she dressed and that she probably drank too much and went willingly

2012 - Sue is taken to the ER where Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner collects evidence of rape and there were drugs found in her system, perpetrator is arrested and it is found in the course of investigation he has done this before.

Scenario 4
Mike is having problems reading in school and is flunking his elementary school tests

1957 - Mike is told that he is lazy or stupid, his parents are mad at him and paddle him for being lazy because they know he isn't stupid, he drops out of school and becomes a criminal

2012 - Mike is tested for a learning disability, it is found that he has Dyslexia and is given additional tutoring in how to successfully work with his learning difference and is a successful doctor someday

It can go either way because there are good and bad in each era.....

We have a member of our db who posts here.

That person has been called everything from A to Z , because of her postings. That person has Dyslexia.

 The mind of others ,sometimes does not register same as each of us..

 Same person is very successful in several venues..

My husband has Dyslexia and went through the period where teachers thought he was stupid, lazy, and would never amount to much or so his parents and he were told (his teacher that made a big deal of how my husband would never amount to much and was a waste of a teachers hard work ended up having his life saved by my husband 10 years later).  He ended saving lives for a living and made both national and international news many times.  Next time you see a scene on TV where the person has a cyclone fence pole through their torso and the seat behind, is talking and they cut the pole infront of person and behind the seat taking seat and peson to the ER, he was the person that actually was on that call and saved that man's life.  There are many other scenes that make it into popular TV and Movies that are based on his saves.

My son has Dyslexia and it was a struggle until we found an incredible tutor in the fifth grade who taught him that he is not learning disabled, he just learns differently and different is good because it looks at the world from another point of view and expands all our knowledge.  He had to fight against prejudice from teachers and school administrators almost daily and he is a strong and smart person today who is not afraid to stand up for what he believes.  My son is an artist that has an incredible imagination and has been in a few shows at a very young age receiving praise for his different point of view. 

I am sorry for others that don't understand difference
