In just a matter of days my youngest goes off to college so this year both of my kids will be away from home.  My son is a senior in college majoring in computer information systems and my daughter is a freshman majoring in pre-pharmacy.  They go to 2 different large universities.  My husband and I will officially be "empty nesters" and I don't look forward to it.   Are there any other empty nesters on this forum?

My older sister said it has been awful for her, but her husband owns his own company and works so much that she is home by herself a lot.  Did either of you begin a new hobby?  My husband  thinks we may spend more time hiking with the dogs and learning about the history of our area because we have done this some this summer.

I've been empty nest for almost 12 years and now it go even emptier after the divorce... and I love it!  Once you get used to sleeping, not worrying about where they are, what they're doing, etc., you start to relax and enjoy it!  You learn to trust that you did your job well and they're capable adults :)

I'm always remodeling or working on something, I recently started getting more involved and learning about training, dogs keep me laughing but at night when it's sooooo quiet- yuck! I think because my husband's still active duty and comes and goes a lot may have something to do with it, lol! When we're all together, the house is alive with laughter and noise, it's gotten easier but there's that part that wishes we could do it all over again

My littlest one just left to go on vacation with friends, it is his first time ever away from home and family.  Not exactly what you are talking about but I'm missing him already! When the oldest makes himself scarce, which he does lately, being a teenager, it is going to be real quiet around here. I think the dog is going to really miss him too, they are the best buds! I've got some time left before I have to really deal with an empty nest. That will be very tough, I think.

When that happens, I'll probably start painting again. Too bad I'm getting so blind! I need glasses to read and can't read the highway signs until I'm right on top of them. I have visions of becoming the next Grandma Moses, except for the primitive part. Such irony in life.

Bee, you're getting a taste of what is in store later.  When my kids went away to camp, I missed them so much, but it did not compare to how much I missed my son when he went away to college.  I would walk by his room and expect to see him in it, but it's emptiness was so sad.  But, back then, I still had my daughter home.  Now I'll have 2 empty rooms.

Clee, I can see why it is more difficult for you with your husband gone so much.

Thanks, GSDtravels, for your words of wisdom.

My son is off to his own apartment finally and I am looking forward to having a clean house, laundry in the basket not in the hallway or on the door, dirty dishes actually making it to the sink, no lights left on in rooms no one is using, being able to afford the utilities, a refridgerator that actually has food left in it from the day before when I spent a over a hundred for groceries.........yep looking forward to it..
