THE STATE OF THE OCEANS

So, do you think there is cause for alarm? How serious is the state of our OCEANS and does it mean mass extinctions in our lifetime? Do people have the will to stop it?



"The world's oceans are faced with an unprecedented loss of species comparable to the great mass extinctions of

prehistory, a major report suggests today. The seas are degenerating far faster than anyone has predicted, the

report says, because of the cumulative impact of a number of severe individual stresses, ranging from climate

warming and sea-water acidification, to widespread chemical pollution and gross overfishing.

The coming together of these factors is now threatening the marine environment with a catastrophe

"unprecedented in human history", according to the report, from a panel of leading marine scientists brought

together in Oxford earlier this year by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO) and the

International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)."

No we are all doomed......the earth will become a dead planet and its all our becasue of us......and its already too late to do anything about it..

"The National Academy of Sciences says that man-made global warming is real so it must be," or, "The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change represents the expert views of 2,500 of the world's top scientists: who am I to say they're wrong?"

Extinction of a species is not funny but its been going on for billion's of years. If the earth gets to the point that it cannot support humans (whether caused by humans or not), then we will become extinct, and another species will take over. Its natural law, there are many examples of this exact thing happening over and over again. I'd love to pretend that the world, and all her diversity, is static but she is not, she is very dynamic.

As far as the UN - that's an even bigger joke! Its one of the most corrupt organizations on this globe. China is the most polluting nation in the world and they don't give a damn about anything except themselves. Its the same for many other 3rd world countries.....they don't care about over harvesting fish, killing threatened species or polluting, they care about shot term results - how many citizens will go to bed hungry and when will the next hunger riot begin and if the riot will be big enough to over power the current government.

In the greater scheme of things, I'd much rather have food in my belly then letting a stupid smelt prevent farmers from producing it. I'd rather have gas in my car then having to walk because of a stupid lizard.

29, again. LOL  Selfishness yes, I understand that is uppermost importance for you, Sitasmom. You come first, instead of everybody shares and lives. Keep the debate to the health of the oceans not the highlights of failings of more selfish people. 

Pragmatic......

If you were starving to death I bet you'd eat the damn lizard and have the smelt for dessert.......I know I would!

Short sightedness would put you in that position to choose. What I'm saying is it doesn't have to be that way. But you might be uncomfortable with compromise. I think it is worth it. Less diversity is not the way to go especially for purely selfish reasons. 

The thing is, do you think Man can survive if the oceans are no longer alive?

the oceans will always be "alive" they just won't be alive in the way that we know them or want them to be.

the UN can pass all the treaties they want, but the most pollouting countries on this globe will not follow them.
