Ten GSD die of heat-related illness while being transported from airport to training facility - Page 1

This is a horrible story so I won't recap it, I'll just link to an article on it. Other articles have stated that a bystander purchased one of the dogs for $7500 which makes the entire debacle even more bonkers. 

I and others are following the story in hopes of learning the identity of the owner/trainer as well as where the dogs came from. Since they were being picked up at a big airport I assume they were imported, but that's just a guess. 

AT BEST this person was transporting a large number of dogs in a vehicle designed to ship produce, with no ventilation, lighting,  or monitoring system. From the pictures published it is hard to tell if there even was any climate control at all, so the "air conditioning failure" story has yet to be verified. 

Knowing so many dogs can die horrible, traumatic deaths locked in crates in a box truck at the hands of their owner and the police will respond with "oopsie! But, he did nothing wrong so what can ya do" just seems incredibly insane to me. They let him drive away with dead dogs and ill dogs in crates, with the back of the van completely open, against the orders of the person designated to respond to and investigate such things, without even requiring that he provide the investigator with ID and paperwork. I am just astonished. 

If anyone has any knowledge of the people involved in this, and/or where the dogs came from in the first place, please do let me know. Finding the identity of the person who allegedly purchased a dog on the scene would also be helpful.

I read an article that said they were Police dogs, and there were 19 of them, 10 being hospitalized...how tragic..

8-10 of them are known to have died, whether on the scene/in the van or euthanized after. The police department that interfered with the Humane Society's investigation said that the dogs aren't assigned to a department and belong to the trainer. But who knows really. Found some information on the person who said they bought one of the dogs for $7,500: LINK  The article identifies the person responsible for the dogs as Mike McHenry of FM K9, an ex cop who now brokers dogs for police departments. So, not surprising the police responding to the scene let him slide. 

 

Edit: Obviously that's not a GSD. From what I saw from the videos and photos of that night, the dogs were GSD and Malinois. 

You can kill an overheated GSD by trying to cool them too quickly....

Wow, that's just incredibly sad. For the value of that shipment, I would imagine a rented air conditioned van or two would not have been out of the question. The driver probably had no business being charged with the welfare of these dogs.

In this day and age and at the incredibly high cost of importing quality dogs, what in the wide world of sports was going on there? The trainer transporting had a responsibility to make sure that the AC was working. He had a responsibility to check on the dogs while on the road. If it's over 72 degrees, it's probably too hot to transport in A BOX TRUCK without windows or ventiliation, fans, cooling mats, etc, even if there is an AC unit.

This was the responsibility of the one transporting for sure. What a travesty. I think the article was a bit ignorant calling a Malinois a "blonde german shepherd" that was sold for $7500 on the spot. Outrageous. Praise God that dog was rescued.

I do hope that the individuals responsible are prosecuted and t

hat the kennels in Europe that sold these dogs to the responsible parties refuse to do business with them ever again. I hope people make SURE that the origin kennels are made aware of the situation.
Just sickening to see this occur.
