If a dog comes from outstanding lineage but the Dam was never OFA and as far as I can tell, wasn't SV rated,
but has great parentage, would you purchase a 4 yr old dog from that litter?

Where did you look for the HD rating?    did you look on the OFA site

If it was only here or another pedigree site she may have been x rayed and her pedigree not updated.

I called AKC and did an OFA search. she is a 8 year old dog so you would think, that they would have submitted.
I can't believe with her pedigree that they used her without doing OFA, but, stranger things have occurred.

How do the xrays of the dog you are wanting to buy look, what about the sire.

Was the Dam born in the USA?

I'm trying to decide on the dog in question, if I should pay for the x-ray myself, just to see what they look like.
I would probably never even think about a dog like this except he's beautiful, good temperament and his lineage is very good. It just leaves a hole in the pedigree as far as HD ratings on his mother. Just can't make up my mind if its worth it on a four year old with no formal training. Writing this, I think I'm thinking with my heart and not my business mind. :> )

The way I look at it is this.  If someone is trying to sell any dog over 6-7 months without doing prelims is a problem. So for me anything over a year and not done with proof then they are hiding something.

If they won't get you Xrays with a microchip #, and all info of the dog on the film or disk they are hiding something.

If you can take the dog yourself in for the Xrays then you can and ask the seller to cover the cost if the dog fails maybe

If you are giving money then think of it as a business.

Would you PM me the name of the seller and ad?

I know you want to believe that most breeders do OFA as a matter of course, but you'd be surprised. Many people don't bother to do OFA or PennHip. They justify this with fake science, silly assertions like "he's competing without issue so he's obviously fine," etc. I've even seen one breeder claim that DM is the same thing as HD and can be tested for with a cheek swab! When I started looking for purebred dogs this was a huge obstacle. It was extremely difficult to find health tested dogs.

So for me, no, I will never buy a dog from non health tested parents. There's no excuse for not doing due diligence and if a breeder can't be bothered to do the bare minimum, what else are they hiding, ignoring, or neglecting?

What's sad is that the backyard breeders doing things like this (yes I classify everyone who doesn't health test as a BYB) are winning, because they are charging as much or more for dogs that are thoroughly tested and well bred, but they aren't taking on the expense of properly health testing the parents. It's sick. Please don't buy dogs from people like this, no matter what the pedigree looks like.

Quick edit, to address this point from the OP: "Just can't make up my mind if its worth it on a four year old with no formal training"

No, it's not worth it. If money is changing hands this is a waste of yours, sorry to say. They didn't health test the mother and haven't bothered to train the offspring? I'm guessing this is a breeder to avoid.

I don't know the price of the dog but it can matter...I've bought dogs many times without an X-Ray being done...So what I offer the seller is to have the dog X-Rayed and if they turn out good then you pay for them...If they turn out bad then they pay for them...
If you choose to do it this way...Just choose a Vet that does good X-Rays and can Read them...Hopefully you can read them or have someone with you that can verify what the Vet/Seller tells you...
I've done this many times while buying dogs overseas...
