Sitasmom good post. My grandparents raised me and my sister--when I was very young Mama worked at the state deaf school as a housemother and Papa, who was a retired carpenter--worked half days for this little mfg. company keeping books, answering phones, etc. Mama would not just leave us with anybody, so her best friend took care of us and helped with the housework and cooked. And the good thing about that was if you needed a butt whipping Etta would do it just like Mama would. They made us go outside and cut the switches. Shoot we never thought about running off--I guess we had enough sense to know that when we got caught it would be 10 times worse. As I got a little older, I was rebellious and became a wild child--boys, alcohol, eventually drugs............fast forward to when I got tired of all that and came to my senses, I was so glad I had been raised with morals and ethics and was taken care of by people who truly cared about me. Not like kids who were raised in daycare or with strangers as babysitters................I know a lot of the kids here go to Headstart which I think is a good thing because they are constantly being taught. Also because our community is so small, most of the time the teachers are hometown people who have known the kids since they were born and in a lot of cases are kin to most of the kids.

Blitzen when I was a kid most of the mothers were stay at home moms but now it does take both parents working to pay the bills. Also I think kids nowdays are just given way too much. We were poor and never had things just handed out. Even to do certain things, like watch American Bandstand on Sat., we had to clean house and do certain things before we were even allowed to touch the tv..................

blitzen -

when I stayed home, it was 2010 thru 2012 and our income was 42K. We were lower middle income, we went without a whole lot of stuff becuase it was the best for our kids at that time. No cell phone, no cable, one crappy car, no eating out, no eating expensive foods, and in a house that I built with my own hands (no mortgage) ...........mainly we ate from the garden and chicken and fish that I raised.

Most middle class families can downsizing......and home schooling is withing reach if that's the goal.
