Could any of you that have owned both males and females tell me the difference in personality. I have a friend that is deciding between the two. I have only had males all of my GSD career - therefore I have no good information for him. He is a family man and ready to have a GSD - he has went with a great breeder in the business. Of course like everyone - he wants temperment.

i prefer females, my wife likes males. why? i find females (not all) tend to be easier to train and more willing to please their master. they also tend to take to the whole family. most males (not all) tend to be more one person orientated. they may get along with the rest of the family, but they really only respect the alpha(male or female)person. as far as temperment goes, i dont think that has so much to do with the sex of dog, as it does the dog itself. not an easy thing to determine in a puppy. john

In general, I recommend a female. The only real reason for a male over a female is size. Females of course go in heat twice a year unless spayed. Males hike and pee on all of your flowers and bushes, sometimes killing them. Females tend to be just a little bit more protective than males (I will probably get yelled at for that comment). Otherwise, not much difference

With kids I prefer a female for most people.

JMHO..I have a 3yo female & a 4 month old male...my female at 4 months was already trying to be protective, and continues to be; my young male is very laid back, busy as all get out, and dominant when he plays with the female (or tries to be anyway), but very friendly & approachable, like my girl has never been, & I suppose never will be. jo

I too feel females are more suited for children. I prefer females as well. I have owned both and I currently have one male and two females. My females are more protective and easier to handle. My male is more laid back but has a lot of energy and is very large so he is intimidating. My females however, are not as approachable as my male. They are not just overly fond of strangers and need time to check a person out.

I agree that females tend to be better in a family setting, especially when there are children. The males tend to more protective of their turf perhaps moreso than they are protective over all they watch. But, the debate will go on forever. Bob-O

Thanks you guys - I forwarded the site on to him. It appears that a female may be a better choice.

I prefer males but agree with every poster. We have one of each right now. The female is sensitive and if corrected will run to her crate. She is a Czech working dog and hardly a pushover. You can find a passive male but why would you want that. There seems to be a dearth of great female pups available right now for very reasonable prices.
