Kaykohl Land: "Give me a faded saddle over the over angulated rears, non-existent upper arms, and straight shoulders any day!!" You know, even after all I said on colour paled dogs I so agree with you!! Problem is - The dogs possessing both of these awful traits seem to be the ones most rewarded these days! Joanna: Sorry for not taking notice of "Let's put aside the tempeament, hip certificantion and work ethic of GSD..." Your well thought out list is pretty much how I would order things too. Pigment would have to come after croup and head though!

I was told by a famous german breeder that breeding for the really red dogs will produce poorer pigment in the long run and give us the fading black saddle and black mask on the face.

Joanna, Your last post was a good one, but two small points if I may You're perhaps including good temperament/work ethics as 'givens' too readily? But, are these really that commonly found or so readily achieved? I also wonder if correct angles and other structural details mentioned - good strong hocks are important too of course - and as considered by themselves in isolation - automatically result in the desired overall balance and thus good movement.

My mistake, didn't realize that temperment and health were givens...soundness over colour anyday!

Hi guys ,I agree with Lenny. I have a lovely Valium daughter at home.I house her for a good friend and she was rich black and tan when she came here. She has since faded to a rich red-!!!!!! I feel this is becoz of Karly ,as a lot of Valium progeny lack saddles. But no other complaints as she is a super bitch and about the best constructed mover in this country.

I believe pigment and eye color are related but, can anyone tell why dark eyes are favored by Standard perse?
