Some studs i've known were also thrown off by females that were too forward towards the males at breeding time. The females mounting and throwing them selves at the males backed them up and made them unwilling to initiate. As soon as the females lost interest the studs would then come forward and intitiate breeding.

Some dogs need PERMISSION to mount a bitch - it's true. Especially if they are owned by a woman that they are 'in love with' -- They are devoted to their owner and have figured out that it would be cheating to do the happy dance with someone else !! How's that for anthropromorphizing -???? Maybe he's smart enough to know they're not ready on a given day, maybe as said above, he's sick - and even arousal hurts, or there's something subtle going on in his spine that prevents him from gettin' up. Maybe he has to be "in love". My 17 month old male thinks my 10 year old bitch is somebody he should be practicing on - She however does not feel the same way. It makes for interesting evenings in the family room. But the more she protests - the better he likes it !! Maybe somebody discouraged (punished) this dog for mounting when he was little, and the message is well remembered !! Who knows. Check for medical issues first !! on both !!

Ginagsds, All good advise given by Pineridge & others. Here is another example you might consider, heard quite recently of an import dog who refused to mate bitches. Turned out he had a nasal infection which had prevented him from distinquishing the bitches scent. Just thought if your friend finds it necessary to have him checked out at the vets, this could be one of the more simple problems. Regards Sue B

If all above fails count your losses, go for a few pints and eat a good curry!!!!!

There is also the possablity that the female has a problem....maybe a stricture??I did have a female come to me for breeding and my male wouldn't even try...decided to do AI to get the breeding, as instructed by the owner, went to insert sperm and the tube would only go in 1/2 inch....she had a very thick stricture and that was stopping the male and anything else from getting in there...just a thought Heather
