Hellery wants to shut down gun manufacturing in us by holding the makers of guns used in shootings liable...but..she doesn't have a problem taking donations to clinton foundation (read bribes) to sell guns to foreign countries while secretary of state.

Correct me if I am out of line but US folks have a real saviour complex in that they direct way too much hope, money, passion into a single individual with the expectation that individual will just fix all their woes and the woes of the world.

Folks no leader is that good.

All it takes is the right one to prove you wrong. There have been exceptional leaders before and nothing to say there will never be another.

Saviour complex, though? That descriptive instead is typical of your favorite pastime! Not how I think about it when choosing the POtUS. Such doubt as yours would certainly condemn some from trying, except those who have their confidence instilled with "the right stuff".

A better word would be saviour mentality. Not trying to be a dick but it appears obvious in a lot of popular culture from westerns, cop movies, religion, war movies, actual war heroes, music, sport, political campaign style.....

I only speak as an outsider, in contrast we have a "greyman" culture (don't stand out) and most of and our heroes are complete losers eg failed criminals ie Ned Kelly etc.

In all seriousness though, the answer to your question is really dependent upon whether you're looking toward a strictly cultural component or an explanation which reflects our current political climate, or both perhaps. Simply and immediately I would suggest to you that it is less a matter of a seeking out a savior and more an effort at damage control.

Also consider that non-religous politicians in US effectively don't exist, the more wacky the belief the better I contend my initial unjustified hypothesis actually has some merit.

What can we conclude from this list! My, oh my! 

We could be picky about the spelling & editing of that link,
or its ability to conflate childhood illness into the same list
as human fallibility and corruption - but it would still be a
list that says: Australian politicians who become Prime
Ministers are not saints. Qu'el surprise.

It seems that one area of culture which cannot be separated
from politics is the temptation to bend the rules in their own
interests. Nixon would be a good example of that.

And yes I know there are many on UK soil to whom the same
applies.

But then, what else to expect when we are all trapped into
supporting political systems run on the "cult of the individual" ?
