Hello.  Since I hear so much about scammers trying to get away with this, that, and everything else, I was wondering what everybody recommends as a safe method of payment when you're dealing with the sales and shipping of dogs, etc.  I have always had success using Pay Pal for payments, but now I see people are getting ripped off there too.  Obviously when dealing with sales over a distance, cash isn't an option, so what's the safest method out there?

The safest methods out there are a reputable escrow company or cash in hand when you collect the goods in person. Anything else is subject to ripoff.

Ask for a bank check or wire directly to a specific account for that purpose only.

Honestly, I haven't seen that much of a problem when breeders really know their buyers. I think you need to do a certain amount of due diligence when selling a pup, and through that, you get an idea of what a buyer is like. I've been lucky so far.

Cash or wire transfer are the safest ways. All rest is marginal.

I agree!  Though sometimes you just never know.  I read the posts about the scammers, and most are pretty obvious, but there are always those few that manage to be convincing enough.  Unfortunately, especially in these poor economic times, seems some people would do anything to make a quick buck!  That is why I asked which is the safest method of payment.  Resonable and real people will be more than willing to comply with the payment method you choose.

For the ones I bought from overseas, it was wire transfers.  For within the U.S. it was by check.  No dog was shipped or picked up until the funds had cleared.

As a buyer (not a breeder) I recently paid for my dog with a personal check.  I sent the deposit certified mail so I had a receipt they received it.  When I picked up the dog I also paid the remainder with another check.  I would have been happy to do it another way but they didn't specify.

Pay Pal deposit and balance with wire transfer has worked well for me.

PayPal for me also. Never had any problem.
