Every year about this time I get offers for free venison. Last year I took some venison sausage and the dogs loved it. But they got gas so bad I had to lock them out of the bedroom at night. I ended up throwing most of it away.

Does anyone else feed their dogs venison? I'm thinking maybe I just got a bad batch.

LOL.  Did the sausage have additives?

I feed venison whenever I can get it.  Right now I have about 40 lbs in my freezer.  I have never had an issue with it.  I just freeze it for a couple of months before I feed it raw.  It is low in fat, so I supplement wth other sources of fat.

I'm not sure about additives, but that's what I was thinking. It was something else ground up in the sausage, and not the venison.

I also feed out venison when I can get a hold of it.  Sometimes the venison sausage is mixed with pork when it is processed.  Sometimes people have this done if they take it in to get processed.  Depending on what you feed your dog if you abruptly change things gas is what happens.  I raw feed mainly chicken and supplement with other meats and if I feed too much of the other then I also notice gas.  I just wish I could get more venison.

As we call it here in the south, Deer sausage, is usually prepared and processed by also adding, a little pork, green onions, garlic and several other seasonings.  So if  that venison sausage is anything like how it is prepared in this area, there could be several very powerful contributers that could cause gas.....Whew, I can imagine what you went through.....

Mine get some gas on venison, when they first get it. After the first few days, it's gone. I wouldn't feed anything processed, personally. They eat it all though; head, legs, ribs, all of it.

Just a fun clip...these are pups just shy of 5 weeks old, eating a deer head (thought I'd warn the squeamish folks).

It could be the spices...We've never had any trouble with our dogs eating venison, but I don't feed sausage to the dogs...If I make sausage, it's for humans only!

I shot a doe last year and processed most of it myself. I gave the dogs the forearms and other parts to rip the flesh off of and the bones to chew on. They had a blast, but they also had had rus for 3 days. I'm so unlucky when it somes to feeding raw.
