I hear a lot of negatives about this dog, no comments about it under his name though. Could someone elaborate what was wrong with this male? I'm fairly new to GSD's but learning a lot, so please forgive my ignorance. Thanks, Leo

I seem to remember reading that Canto did not have the best temperament and maybe also had some progeny with similar temperament. Also, there appears to be some link between him and hemophilia A/von Willebrands Disease. Think it was in willis', Genetics of the GSD.... if you can get a copy of it, it's good to have.. no easy read but lots of info

Canto didn't have the best temperament and the breeder/person who owned him bred him anyways?!?! Dont get me wrong but that sounds like what a backyard breeder would do... Can somebody please clarify this to see if this is actually true? What kind of temperament issues did he have?

Well... the people of the "Canto's era" said what the dog was some clear on his pigment, the temperament was so bad... was thin and elegant, with very good angles in the forward, good length of the rump... The people that it is known about this, sum the situation up this way: Mutz the character and the steadfastness in general, very few homegeneidad in his sons Quanto the type, the heads, the pigment, the front good angles, the short and fallen rumps, the slack backs Canto, the elegance... the type ¡¡¡¡¡

Malcom B.Willis (the German Shepherd Dog:A Genetic History, 1991 p.83) on Canto's temperament: "Not ideal for character which lacked firmness and his sire was once criticised for character as was his dam. Progeny did not stand up well to stress."

Speaking of Canto my dog of many years past was linebred 5-5 on Canto von der Wienerau and 5-5 Bernd Lierberg, interesting, and then came the split. Don't know how much affect the linebreeding had but he was the last Beautiful Black and Red dog that I ever owned that I would feel safe walking down the back alley of south central...real man stopper.
