Hi everyone, I got these x rays done of my then 7month old gsd. I was wondering what people see? My vet says pano I’m the left arm but even he seemed a bit unsure which is making me unsure. The limping is still persisting on and off.

Thanks!

No wonder the vet was uncertain; the breed, age and symptoms make for a reasonable diagnosis; the X-ray shows some vague Panosteitis lesions in the area of the elbow, but they are not particularly marked. However, they sometimes aren't. Even quite bad Pano cases have been shown not to have very obvious bone cavity indications.

I am not any kind of expert on elbow issues, but wonder if the elbow joint has some problems ?

If it is Pano, at least you can take refuge in the knowledge that by 18 months or so it will usually have disappeared. If however the elbow is in any other way defective, we may be looking at something more persistent. Best of luck.

I am not a vet and certainly no authority on pano.

I am however, someone who has dealt with pano several times. In every case, pano lesions showed up as "bright" spots on the long bones and there was no doubt that there was an issue.

With pano most of the time it's just down to the most likely diagnosis. IMO (not a vet) any pano lesions are pretty much the smoking gun.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I am really hoping it is just pano as this is my first gsd and it just makes me so sad that I can't run him hard or anything and he's all cooped up most days for the rest. The vet did say that his bones fused nicely together and that the joints look fine. I have been giving him ester c and fish oil (for the dry skin). Does that help at all? Or should i just stop the supplements and let it run it's course.

Edit: I want to add that I have reduced his raw from 2 lb to 1.5 lbs as the vet said he was growing too rapidly which most likely caused it.

At his age I would give him joint supplements (NOT calcium, though) as in my experience it is while young dogs are still growing that these do the most good; others will say differentIy, but I have never found them particularly effective with mature animals. Certainly keep up the fish oils, as they help with synovial fluid production, as well as his skin.

You may need to experiment a bit with pain medicines in addition to what you are doing to manage the condition, as sometimes Pano can be very uncomfortable. & Yes, keeping him from putting too much weight on, too quickly, is very important.
