I would like to see how many people have tried this method of breeding and what success have people had? Eric LUKE www.zwischensee.com eluke@mts.net

It all depends on what experience your vet has had with the procedure. It can be successful about 90% of the time if everything is done right... If one little thing goes wrong you won't get puppies- about 4 people have to do a repeat breeding with Belschik because the procedure was not followed properly... Even when the semen was EXTREMELY potent!!! If the good thing for the stud dog owner is that if the bitch doesn't get pregnant it can be *proved* that it was either the Vet's fault who did the AI procedure, or the bitch's fault... Because the semen is what it is at the time of insemination. Eric, if you have any questions regarding exactly what people have done when breeding with my dog Belschik- the good, and the bad, just send me an email. According to SV rules it is prohibited to use a dog's sperm for breeding. It all should happen in a "natural" manner.

I have tried this once -- I worked with a well-known "Reproduction Specialist". My female had to stay at the vet's for almost her entire heat -- in order to take blood samples at the same time every day and send them to Pennsylvania for hormone level testing -- This was very expensive, having to do testing every day (or every other day I believe) for nearly 2 weeks until it was certain she was ovulating. Then there is getting the frozen shipped properly and thawed properly. A vet has to know what they are doing to do any of this properly. Semen was surgically implanted on the proper day, followed up by a vaginal insertion 24 hours later. I believe the total cost came to something around $800.00 U.S. We were told every day that this was a "classic" heat cycle, and the hormone levels were "textbook" examples - everything was great. Well, we got NO puppies. So we learned a lot - and I don't blame the vet or the bitch or the stud's semen -- there a lot of variables here. Of course, the stud owner is going to blame the bitch, and the bitch's owner doesn't want to tee-off the stud dog owner, so he can blame the vet, and it goes on and on. I only tried this because the dog was far away and his frozen semen was available. (and I didn't want to ship her across the country). Now, after this experience, I would not do this again, unless the dog was DEAD and I absolutely had to have puppies by this male. We did a simple AI with my stud dog because the bitch he was trying to breed to totally uncooperative - but it was direct from him to her via a tube !! nothing frozen or chilled or anything -- and the first time even this procedure did not take -- 6 months later we did it again and she had 8 puppies. I think frozen is a whole nother ball-game !! Maybe if you use lots more than the recommended number of "straws" and you already know you have a proven bitch -- then maybe things will work out. I would find another dog and increase the chances. I don't know that I would agree with 90% success rate (but niether do I agree with exorbitant stud fees -- in person or chilled or frozen. What happend to the rule of thumb that says the stud fee is "about" the price of a puppy. Even puppies out of the 2 times American and Canadian Grand Victor are available for around $1,500 - depending on who their mother is. -- GOOD LUCK
