I have an 8 year old German import (showlines) and about the last 2 years have noticed that she frequently gets these "pimples" or "cysts" on her skin, about pea size. Sometimes they are pretty big and a lot of white stuff comes out and leaves a hole on her until it heals. She only gets a couple at a time, but I wondered if anyone else's dog gets these or any ideas why she gets them? She is an indoor dog, and eats food with no corn in it.

It's probably best to have your dog looked at by your vet when she gets one of those bumps, but to me it sounds like a sebaceous cyst..... a hair follicle fills up almost like a pimple and gets infected.... I have several dogs that get them..... I usually leave them alone and they go away but used to work for a vet that said the only way to truly remove them is surgically. Best bet, sine none of us can see ... see your vet...

Can it be so called “hot spots?” Does she get them on her back and croup mostly, or in other places? Hot spots is a kind of a skin infection that some dogs develop. It is not contagious. It may happen if the immune system is not working proper, but also if the dog is left alone a lot and is anxious about this. If it is hot spots, try to spend more time with your dog, preferably outside, as inside containment has a negative effect on such condition. The best thing to do is to take your dog to the vet and see what it is, because it is very difficult to diagnose a skin condition without seeing it. JMO

What you are describing sounds like scent glands, in some dog they get the size of a pea. If you squeeze them pus comes out. The pus is a little dry. That’s all you can do. If they get very big, you would need to take her to the vet and have one or two stitches.
