Anyone else concerned about the Ursus bottleneck? As we can see Ursus is either the father or grandfather of 6/7 of the top 11 males. Heaven help the breed if problems stem from the blood. Maybe the inclusion of one or two other good sires like Orbit v Tronje or his blood higher up the placings would make sense on hindsight.

More than this If you analize the frist 30 males URSUS, WALACE, YASKO, GHANDI, ORBIT represent 50-60% of all fathers 72 % of those dogs have Jeck in the pedigree. No Fedor or Uran are found. This is more or less repeated in the females and also in the younger classes

Good point, and it was not so long ago that Fedor and Uran featured very heaviley! I was once told by an old breeder. No Fedor no character. I remember watching him in either 88/89 leading his group with Mark v Haus Beck in the group. Fedor barked and peed all the way around the ring. A great dog....but, it is said that his father was not Lasso. For me Uran was incomparable as a sire. I always preferred him to Quando in terms of heart ruling head. Surely with Uran, Eiko,Yago,Ulk etc etc or those lovely females Uran produced, there should be an answer. It is starting to create a new(ish)pillar of the breed in Ursus.

Orschler is retired at the end of this year...Scheerer will do the males next year...should be interesting. Watch out for the Ursus/Yasko fire-sale....

In the "battle of of the big medalions" the actors have never taken care of other aspects than how the dog looks and awards they can get in the showring. The result are several problems witch destroys the GSDs reputation. With a system witch is so corrupt as the GSD-world were a breeder and judge can place dogs from their own breed in the top (and were the system alows it) this problem will be a nevere ending and destroying story.

In the end it is the responsibility of the breeders to combine the available lines with wisdom. It is very difficult to do when you see the influence that show results have on breeding trends. Too many are breeding for high placings and monetary gain instead of protecting the integrity of the breed. I have purchased dogs from the Ulk and Cary line just for the reasons you have stated. I can always find a nice Ursus line dog to breed to, their a dime a dozen, and with the way things are set-up they will continue to be for years to come. Breeders must never be afraid to use alternate lines and bring fresh blood into the scheme, it is the only way for the breed to survive. We must all remember that history repeats itself and learn a lesson from the overuse of Uran, Quantum and Jeck.
