Hi everyone. I was wondering whether anyone could tell me if the red pigment in a Black/red GSD comes out more/ intensifies as the dog grows older or does it lessen and fade the older they get.

It depends on the bloodline. Some lines show really nice color early and with others it takes time for the color to come out more/intensify as the puppy matures.

Yes, it increases or intensifies as they age.

Normally The dog you have at 2 years of age is what you have for it's lifetime. From birth to 2 years they are constantly in the "changing" mode.

Mine did. She's now 5 and the red has really come on strong this past year!

Mine tend to be darker as thier second coat comes in.

One of my dog's bloodlines always darken as they get older....born black/tanish....turning to black/dark brownish red.

Robin, Yani babies start like mahogany deep red their first week and stay really dark, and then as they grow are dark red then some stay dark red then my dena is more mahogany wouldnt ya say Robin? Your litter with Yani was dark too, right? Well this is always Yani anyway... all her puppies are very dark red so it comes through her no doubt, and we got that Dena like her dad :) Drago is getting darker too but he was always pretty dark.. Bracke out of my Brando litter, dark red and wasnt that dark as a baby tho... so who knows.. and Brackes sire is pretty tan/brown not red like Yani..
