Hello everyone. A friend of mine recently had her dog xrayed for OFA hips and elbows. This dog's elbows definitely will not pass and several people have stated that they feel the dog will likely rate as Grade 3 ED. However, the dog is not currently showing any signs of any lameness what so ever. He still jumps around and runs completely normal. So, my question and also something that the owner is wondering, is IF this dog does indeed come back as rating either Grade 2 or Grade 3 ED, what is the typical prognosis and quality of life like for the dog?

Trouble with 'ED' is it covers several conditions. If for example a dog has OCD of the elbow joint(s) it will get a 3 and will almost certainly end up with a good deal of pain and needing surgery. There are other malformations of elbows which also score high but may have a lesser effect. I am also becoming cautious that we may find a bad elbow result is like a high Hip Score: in some cases a dog can be assessed as radiographically poor, but not manifest any lameness or apparent discomfort. I guess time, and more people getting elbows done, will show whether that is the case.

With regard to your dog (generally speaking when someone goes to the doctor and says something like "my friend has this condition and I am wondering..." it is usually their condition) So anyway, you want to know the prognosis for your dog, of if I am wrong, your friend's dog (you friend not being curious enough to ask here) I would say this...

As far as HD and ED are concerned, the dog can live a decent life IF it is not encouraged to jump over objects be it in IGP or Agility or AKC obedience. There may be no symptoms now, but later on, in most cases there will be arthritis and pain. Both can be managed to some extent by supplements such as Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and Wobenzyme. Taking the dog on walks regularly and either swimming or underwater treadmilling sometimes helps. Less successful is acupuncture. Forewarned is forearmed. Good luck.

it's pretty much been covered and as HM said there are several causes of ED. the dog may live a long life and never have a problem, or maybe not. they will just have to ride it out and there are surgical repairs available.

jmo,
