Anyone have a dog that recovered from lepto? Wondering about your experience with it.

Brother's dog had it. Was on doxy for 2 weeks. Only symptoms were going off of food and a little lethargic. Blood and urine now clear. Ultrasound showed no damage to kidneys but bloodwork does.

I have a now 10 year old Dutch Shepherd that had Lepto as a 2-1/2 year old. She was on Doxi for over a month. So was my old GSD and me as I have a compromised immune system. Her kidney values a slightly high but considering her age, not too bad. She gets Dr Harvey's Canine Health Premix and cooked turkey to help her kidneys.

A friend's husky had it as a pup. When she got into old age (12 or 13 or so) she got very sick from kidney failure and had to be euthanized.

Her brother missed her so much he howled all night long and refused to eat. The next day, he collapsed, and was taken to the vet. The vet found he'd had a major heart attack, and HE was euthanized, too.

If you want to get sentimental about it, you could say he died from a broken heart... :'(

Dogbyte - Did her kidney values improve at all after being off the doxy awhile? I'm wondering if the kidneys will heal somewhat within a month (or a couple months) or if the damage is done and nothing will improve.

He just turned 2 so hoping for a long life with minimal kidney problems. He is raw fed.

I remember that her values did get better. They have a new test that rates the stage of kidney failure. In the last 4 years her BUN and creatin (sp?) levels have remained constant and she is considered in stage 2 of "kidney failure". Like her vet says, not bad for a 10 year old Dutch. Prayers your brothers dog has some more recovery.

For anyone that doesn't know, there's a vaccine for animals, but not humans. Lepto can be deadly to animals and humans, and it can be passed from animal to human and human to animal. Normally transmitted via rodents or contaminated water.

Because of where I was working and living, I always got my K9s and cats vaccinated against lepto (and pretty much everyting). Although no rodent issues here, the prevalence of water, marshy areas, frequent flooding, and potential for water contamination, I still keep the lepto, etc. vaccinations UTD. Had good experience with the vaccine.

He is raw fed.

This can cause any number of health problems as well so I'd suggest you stop that immediately particulary since your dog's health is now so compromised.

"This can cause any number of health problems as well so I'd suggest you stop that immediately particulary since your dog's health is now so compromised. "

Been feeding raw for over 25 years. I'm sure there are many threads about overprocessed kibble versus raw so I'm not even going to get into it.

Then you've exposed your dogs to bacterial contamination and disease for 25 years.

Now you have a dog that has a serious health issue and you're injecting salmonella and e. coli, and who knows what else, straight into his system.

My dog had it almost 4 years ago. His renal and liver values were off the chart. He was in ICU for 3 days being flooded with IV fluid and 2 IV antibiotics. One was doxy, and a I can't remember if the other was Azithromycin or a Cephalosprin. He was sent home with 10 day of the one antibiotic, and 30 days of doxy. He recovered completely. I think 2 weeks of doxy is completely under treating the lepto. An ultrasound of his kidneys is useless. Lab values will tell how well they are functioning. This is a deadly disease, and no diet will change that. The problem is, once damage to the kidneys and liver have gotten to a certain point, they will not fully recover.
