DOES ANYONE HERE HAVE FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE WITH OWNING A GSD (YOUNG 1 YR) WITH AN EXTRA VERTEBRE AND KNEE DYSPLSIA???
I GAVE MY BEST FRIEND MY PICK PUPPY LAST YEAR AND SHE JUST HAD A COMPLETE PHYSICAL EXAM WITH X RAYS.. THEY SAY THIS IS WHAT HE HAS.
SHE'S READY TO PUT HIM DOWN!
I ASKED HER TO WAIT UNTIL WE HAVE A SEOND AND THIRD OPINION AND SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THIS.

HE IS NOT IN ANY PAIN RIGHT NOW AND DOES NOT LIMP.

Can you post x-rays?

Knee dysplasia?

I'd suspect your friend didn't quite get the information correct--that what the vet more likely said is that the dog has a transitional vertebrae, and elbow dysplasia. I suggest that you and she make contact with the vet and go over the findings together so you are sure of what's being said.

Either way, if your friend is insisting on putting the dog down, ask her to give the dog back to you instead. That way you can check into the situation yourself.

Good luck.

Yes, I told her I had never heard of knee dyspasia and she assured me she had it right.

I will however try to get the real info... and I would never let her put him down.

She says he needs surgery to remove the vertebre ??

As far as the knee, I am trying so hard to get cleared information. This lady is also going through multiple crisis' in her life all at the same time

I'm still reading up on it  but thank you!

Is it possible to remove a transitional vertebrae? I've never heard of that happening, and knowing what I do of anatomy (retired nurse) I wouldn't think it was possible without totally destroying nerve transmission in the spine.

I would say you are not getting complete information from the new owner. I echo what  others have said: get the dog back, so you can get the full story!

Thank you both for the feed back.

I am asking her for the disc today so I can see what they're talking about.
Having a discussion with the Vet's here is an act of God
I will get to the bottom of this hopefully mixed up info.

While you're shopping for a new best friend, I will tell you that my mother and I both have extra vertebrae. So far, so good. Neither of us have been euthanized, yet. If we are killed, it will be a crime of passion, most likely, and not an act of mercy, particularly in my case, I suspect.

Seriously- to even consider putting down a dog who is not showing any outward signs of a problem is criminal. It may well be that the vet is mistaken and not your "friend" but either way, I'd get that dog out of there ASAP and take my own films if they won't share them.

Stupid veterinarian and a stupid owner .. a deadly combination for any dog. Form does not predict function. Plenty of dogs, humans, and billy goats with supposed malfunctions predicted by X-Ray walking around and living a long and happy life. An X-Ray does not predict anything .. it is a snap shot of what is .. and X-rays do not predict the health and function of offspring either .. just OFA and veterinarian nonsense supported by profits from $400 X-ray charges.

I would kindly offer to take the dog off her hands, sounds to me like the whole situation has gone south and the dog has a problem now and it is just too much for her...Given that thought I also have not heard of a vet removing the extra vertebrae but really I am not up to date on the most current ortho vet care. If you cannot get a copy of the disk or the one she has, I would totally re film this dog. After all you are talking about ending this dogs life. Just sounds ridiculous. I am fearful for this dog, I would act fast if at all possible. Good luck Nan

Is it possible she is referring, or her vet to a luxating patella? I have heard of it in this breed although usually it's a toy breed issue.
