In August of this year 2 Alaskan Aalamutes were confiscated by authorites in St. Paul, MN after they escaped from the owner's property. They were not harassing anyone or destroying property. However, the local humane socitey refused to release them to their owner because they decided they were wolf hybrids, illegal in St. Paul. After a lot help from many Malamute breeders, photos, testimoney, etc, it came before the court and and it was ruled that the dogs were in fact hybirds since they had yellow eyes. Unfortuanltely, they are not registered with AKC and the breeder had refused to cooperate although the parents are both AKC registered. They were purebred, poor quality, but still purebred Malamutes. Now she must either put the dogs down or get them out of St. Paul. There is also the matter if a $3,000 bill owned to the humane society for their board. She is appealing and the dogs will be relocated for now. Why am I posting this to a GSD list? Simply because it can also happen to GSD owners and anyone with dogs with erect ears or that even look like they might be distantly related to wolves. There is no DNA test to make the distinction either. If your municipality has legislated such a moronic law against owning hybirds, you really should take it upon yourself to find out exactly how and who will make that determination. These people took the word of a local self proclaimed wolf expert over that of experienced Malamute breeders, one of whom is top producing breeder of all time, an AKC licensed judge and owner herself of timber wolves. The "experts" reasoning - no purebred Mal ever had a yellow eye. We even sent photos of AKC champions with yellow eyes, one from a bitch of my own breeding, but it did no good. Big brother is now policing the dog world.

Hi Bltz, The wolf was hunted down in European countries to the very last individuals, largely as a result of unfounded, irrational fear and folklore superstition. Even now, a poor lone specimen only needs to raise its head and widespread hysteria erupts! It's an indictment of human nature itself! The foolish notion that we are now in more enlightened times is clearly a nonsense. Even if this animal is a hybrid, is that good reason for such heavy-handed response? You'd know better than most, of course, that all dogs are descended from wolves, regardless of appearance, Shepherd no more or less than any other. Hope you're well - waiting for your irascible girlfriend to show up?

Hi again, Peter! Actually, the travesty in this instance is not that hybrids have been banned there but that these two dogs have been mislabeled as such. Banning hybrids has arisen from several well documented cases of these animals having killed children. While wolves in the wild will avoid human contact at all costs, hybrids typically result in an animal with the predatory instincts of a wolf that no longer fear or avoid humans.

Nice to see you here, Keith, I stand corrected Keith. Above I said that all dogs are equally derived from wolves but, as I penned it, I started to wonder if this applied to same extent with Malamute and Husky - any ideas? Regards.
