Hard to believe they all missed a tick on a seriously ill dog and were about to kill him .. no high fives for doing what should have happened days earlier .. both the owners and the vet were negligent in not finding the tick sooner. The intern gets a gold star for speaking up and saving the dog's life. Also there is no edible tick control product for dogs that I am aware of that are safe and effective (especially for a Sheltie).

Check your dog every day for ticks.
Tick paralysis is common in fl. In the late 70s, I had a dog that was only four yr old at the time that became weak in the rear legs and was unable to walk, within a day. He acted happy, no pain. I took him to my vet, myvet said right away it was tick paralysis. Checked around my dog's head and found a tick on his neck.
He told me that usually, the ticks need to be around the head of the dog, and then long the tick is attached, the more involved the paralysis. Within minutes of pulling the tick, my dog was recovering, he totally recovered. Tick paralysis is/was common in fl, that vet said he saw it a lot, he knew immediately what was wrong with my dog.
