I noticed the hair loss around my pup's mouth today and immediately sent these pics to my vet asking if it could be demodex. I took her in for a scraping and it confirmed the demodex. The vet said providing it is localized demodex (which it appears to be), it is self limiting and will typically go away on it's own. He suggested doing nothing right now and watching it. He said it will get worse before it gets better.  He said if it gets really bad, then treatment needs to be considered. He knows I like to be proactive and said if I wanted to do something now a product called Goodwinol (sp?) is an option. He also said another option is to use Advantage mulit for three weeks in a row.  Ivermectin is an option, but it is overkill for what is presenting right now. For those of you who have dealt with this or know someone who has, I would greatly appreciate you sharing your experience regarding treatment, time taken to resolve, etc. I just want to do the best thing for my girl.

Is Promeris still on the market? Because if it is it really does a number on demodex. With a high leve of safety. But i can't remember if it was one of the products that folded when the parent company was bought out. (I've been out of the vet market for a few years now.
Or rub a little ivermectin on the spot. But it should clear up without bringing out the big guns.

Anything stressful happen lately? Shots? Illness? Major change? I know you like to be proactive, and I do too, but remember WHY dogs get demodex symptoms.

I honestly would not worry about it YET. I'm trying to remember who had it as an adolescent...I know one of my dogs did, years ago, and I did nothing and it was gone in several weeks. It was around the eyes, just little spots here and there, nothing alarming. You'll certainly notice if it's spreading out of control and you need to look deeper into the issue.

Hans has a demodex remedy that is easy on them...I'm sure he's posted it here before. A search might turn it up.

Have you considered using NuStock? It really is a great, inexpensive treatment, that does work.
I have used it on hot spots also, with fast , great results. Most feed stores, maybe tractor supply has it. It stinks, but it does work.

Hi Starchar, maybe she has low defenses. Is she stressed? Are you sure it is a correct diagnose? Usually she bite a rubber toy or some thing like that?

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and suggestions.

I was away for a week, from 2/3 to 2/9 visiting my new granddaughter. My husband took care of her and I know he did his best, but things were certainly different. He works full-time and I do not. My dogs are my priority and although I know he cares about the dogs, he doesn't do it like I do and she was definitely crated more.

No vaccines since the beginning of December when she got her rabies vaccine. I gave her Heartgard on 2/1.

I will look into Promeris, NuStock and Hans' remedy. I like the the thought of doing something that may help, yet won't cause any harm.

Definitely a correct diagnosis. Our vet is also a friend and he said there were lots of mites on the slide.

I will give you an update on what I come up with and decide to use. Thank you again very much.

Ok, I did some research and found that Hans recommends Goodwinol, the same product my vet mentioned. I ordered both Goodwinol and NuStock. I'm not sure which I will try first.  If neither one seems to work and it starts to get a lot worse I will order Promeris. Thank you SOOOO much!

Rabies shot wasn't so very long ago...you were gone, she was stressed...

I'm not expecting this to become a big issue. I bet you can beat it with what you've ordered. Your dog will not be bald. :-)
