Our working line, sable GSD is 6-1/2 months old now. He has had loose stools all of the time he has been with us (since 10 wks old) The vet had treated him with antibiotics, tested him for everything. He has had all blood work and even the fasting blood test for EPI. All comes back negative, except at over 6 months he is only 42 lbs, and looks skeletal. I am giving him B12 shots since he has malnutrition. He eats like a horse, and cannot gain. No parasites. He eats Fromm puppy for large breed. The vet claims the next possible step would be exploratory surgery, although there is no evidence of obstruction. Two- grand and I don’t even know if it would show anything. He is obsessed with eating turds whenever possible and cannot stop himself. Ideas? Help?

Has pup's stool been checked for Coccidia and Giardia? If so was it positive, and if positive, what was the treatment??

Antibiotics by themselves can degrade the ph of the intestinal tract... so probiotics daily could help with getting the ph flora corrected.
medications for coccidia and giardia can also wreak havoc with the intestinal tract... and Probiotics can also help return the flora to a healthy normal ph.

Have been reading about fecal transplant procedures. Something to look into before vet cuts him open and starts poking around.

Get Forbid - it is the most effective treatment for stool eating. Make sure you pick up the poop immediately so he has no access to eat it. Even if her doesn't test positive for parasites you should treat him anyway. For worms and giardia a 5 - 7 day course of Panacur. for Coccidia, Sulfa drugs can help with the symptoms, but the most effective way to rid the coccidia cysts is to use Ponzuril (needs a prescription) or Toltrozuril (can get without a prescription). Sometimes it can be SIBO in which case Tylan powder can help and get rid of the problem.
Probiotics will also help as mentioned.

Pups can be notorious poop eaters, but often as in the case of this pup it sounds like he isn't absorbing enough nutrients from the food he is eating, before he is passing his stool.
He is also very hungry and needs these nutrients, as evidenced by his bodily condition and voracious poop eating.
The intestinal tract may be extremely irritated either from the antibiotics and any other meds that he has taken in, potentially preventing nutrient absorption, further compromising the imbalance within the intestinal tract.

Agreed...Toltrazuril can be very effective for killing coccidia.
The meds the vets typically give are used for a longer treatment period,,Albon, Flagyl, or Metronidazole.. typically 10-14 days, and really only address the symptoms, and not kill the coccidia.. as poster above stated. and can be the main reason the gut flora is depleted.
Liquid Panacur (Fenbendazole) is for the treatment of giarda. 5-7 days which if a very bad infestitation may need to be repeated. Again... thus the probiotic should be used to replenish the proper flora in the gut.

it might also be worth testing this youngster for the MDR1 gene.
This gene is known to be present in many dogs of the herding breeds... and if they are an MDR1 gene carrier, can make them 10 times more susceptible to the effects including overdose of many antibiotics, vaccines, and wormers as well as topical flea and tick treatments, so it would be worth testing your dog.
It's a saliva test, and not an expensive one.

Have you ever done a period of bland diet with him, or has he been on his regular dog food all along?
Before I'd subject him to exploratory surgery when there's no indication that there's any sort of blockage, I'd do a course of a simple bland diet of cooked rice, boiled white chicken meat and plain yogurt for at least a full week, and see if his stools improve.

I have had great luck with adding oatmeal to the kibble about l/2 and l/2 to help with loose stool (we have a very sensitive Australian shepherd which we had in emergency 2 times before he was 4 months old; the oatmeal helped to settle his gut along with Metro and (made by Purina) gut health Fortiflora. Our guy has outgrown problem somewhat at now 7 months old. BUT very touchy. Some stay that way for life, some outgrown some problems. I would also get your dog not only Probiotics but a digestive enzyme regardless of what test came out and help him along with the enzymes.
PS: I use quick oats which just takes a minute to cook. I also use the honest kitchen soak dry and add to kibble since Verve & Revel both have oatmeal in them I have since dropped the oatmeal and use The HOnest Kitchen. good luck Nan
