Sunsilver, Agree that with rights comes responsibiliy. That is my point. I am responsible and I expect to have the rights to keep my dogs intact if I choose, not the goverment. As far as too many animals being bred in N. America, yes. That is an issue. If I go hunting for deer I do not use a shotgun though. That's all I am saying. " wondering why olskoolgsds is worrying about keeping his male intact" Well, I thought I gave some pretty good reasons. Not quite sure what I need to say to make it more clear. At 4 months or 14 months I may not know if I am going to breed him. By the way, I only mentioned my male because I am faced with exactly what we are talking about. Bottum line, here in the U.S. we try very hard to not take peoples rights away, at least innocent people. Others we lock up. We also have many unwanted children. We have mothers and fathers that do not make good parents. Should we say that because some are not good that we will take the rights away from all parents and limit parenting to only those that register with and pay big brother? We could probably go on an on but personally I am very happy with our country and the way we ( the United States of America ) handle our Constitutional rights. Since this is an issue with California I am glad that it will be us that handle it. I agree that we don't have all the answers and blotch a lot of stuff, but I would trade our country for none. Again sunsilver, I do apologize for angering you, I would have been angry too. I think we must just understand that we have two very different ways of looking at things and the process we use to get their. I also agree that it would be nice to hear from others faced with these issues, but the bottum line, I would not agree to taking the responsible persons rights away to get to the irresposible. And in the big picture of life I do not see over crowded or over bred dogs as an issue that requires going to these extremes. Sorry, I love dogs, but I don't see putting down unwanted dogs as something that has to shut down our democracy. I promise you this, puppy mills will continue when their is a good profit with little work. Puppy mills do not care about proper care or any thing else, just the money. Dishonest people, those with little or no regard for others will continue to exploit others for personal gain. I have said this before, one of the best tools we have available is our selves. WE, us that love our breed have a responsibility to educate all that we come in contact with. I love walking my dogs in public. Just to keep them healthy minded in crowds and around children. People will always come to me to ask about the dog (s). I use it as an opportunity to educate them on the breed, their uses, how to raise them, and most of all expose all the ignorant ideas they have about them. When you shoot from the hip with people and speak with authority they will listen and learn. I always like to tell them about the myths and idea that they are going to get this great gsd for $ 150.00 that wieghs 130 lbs. If gsd owners took a little time to spend talking with people, gaining their respect and arming them with truthful facts, puppy mills would not be so sucessful. Again I am way past my bedtime. I will leave you with this. HAPPY EASTER.

olskoolgsds, for heaven's sake, you MUST have been tired! When I said 'wondering why olskoolgsds is worrying about keeping his 'mail' intact... LOL!' I was teasing you over your mis-spelling of male! It was late at night when I first read your post, and I was sitting here scratching my head for a bit, thinking, "Wonder what he's got against the US postal service??"

As long as the dog buying public goes to malls or to nice little Amish farmers in Lancaster county to buy their dogs, there will always be puppy mills. Now people want designer breeds and will pay more than I paid for both of my GSD's combined. It will never end, there will always be more dogs in rescue that there are appropriate homes. Trying to convince most people to not buy a dog from a pet shop is like trying to convince them to buy American and boycott Wal-Mart. They see the cute little puppies behind the glass wall, feel sorry for them and whip out their Master Card; impulse buying. I don't know the statistics, but a good percentage of those animals end up rehomed or in a shelter or dumped on a farm because the buyer expected them to be born perfectly trained. All any of us can do is as olskoolgsd does, try to educate them one person at a time, but the real fact is, in the big picture, it's hopeless.

A law banning the sale of dogs at pet stores, and banning the advertising of animals for sale in the newspaper/penny saver would do far more for the homeless dog population than this law will.

"A law banning the sale of dogs at pet stores, and banning the advertising of animals for sale in the newspaper/penny saver would do far more for the homeless dog population than this law will." I agree, but heavens! Can't restrict 'free enterprise' now, can we? We'll all be labelled Nazis or Commies or some such thing... Come to think of it, they don't sell cows and horses in pet stores, so why should they be allowed to sell dogs and cats?

The bill did not pass today. The author claims he will resubmit within two weeks with revisions. If I understand correctly, the bill will die (for now) if not back by the end of the month.

Goodbye stupid waste of time and money bill. Go fight some crime Levino boy.

Well the issue with pet stores is that by law they have to sell to the first person who offers money for a dog. They can't screen puppy buyers... that'd be discrimination. If they can legally force people to alter their dogs, I can't see why it can't be legal to ban the sale of live animals at pet stores.
