It is not unheard of for dogs to choke to death on balls. For that reason, I never let my dog play with a small ball. Balls the size of golf balls are particularily dangerous.
If it does happen, there are 2 things you can do to try to dislodge it:
1) Do the Heimlich maneuver. (Yes, it works on dogs, too!) Wrap your arms around the dog, make a fist out of both hands, and thrust in and up into the dog's belly, just below the ribcage.
2) Sometimes pressing at the very back of the jaw from the underside will do the trick, with one thumb on either side of the jaw. However, you have to be sure you don't damage the trachea.
The most ineffective way of doing it is to try to pry it free from the mouth, without first trying the other two methods to loosen it up. You will probably just drive it in deeper!

This is a pain we have all felt. So sorry. I mourned a great dog for nearly ten years many moons ago.
