Looking for a breeding partner in MD/PA/VA area. - Page 1

Hello All,

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this but I am definitely not a breeder (please let me know if I post at the wrong place). I just want one or two males puppies. I saw this ad:

It seems like this will be a good litter/deal. I am not sure if anybody is around MD/PA/VA area that can be partnered with me and we will split all the costs (or I can pay some extra). I just want one or two males from this litter (hope there will be several) and you can keep the rest including the mother or keep all the profits if you decide to sell them. We can take about the conditions if you want. I have a big horse barn in Maryland that we can breed at my place or if you want to breed at your place, that's perfectly fine too.

I am just falling in love with the father.    What a beauty!

Whoa, Tom ! Just, "Whoa!". Stop and ask yourself this : why would somebody be trying to sell an in-whelp bitch, and as a "package" with whatever puppies she (might) produce ? Especially if she is, as claimed, the 'best of the best' in Macedonia, a different country from the seller ?(though only @ 'SG1' I notice, and yet already a proven brood). Have you searched this website and seen just how many complaints are carried about Serbian scams, over recent years ? Have you met or researched the advertiser, this Serbian breeder who gets his female impregnated but does not want to keep the resultant litter to run on or sell ?

OK you like the pic of the dog named as the sire of the litter - do you KNOW that he definitely is the daddy ? Or that the advertised bitch has been anywhere near him, let alone mated by him ?
Have you seen this dog in the flesh, met him in real life ? Or the female advertised ?

Just my opinion (though I know it will be shared by many here): would not touch this with a twenty-feet pole.

As the old saying goes, if it's too good to be true, it most likely is.

Please do your Homework before committing any money...This web-site has many experienced people who are trying to inform you and help you...

Tom, not every Serbian breeder is going to be a wrong 'un, and we know that. But what Dugan posts is true - there are nice pups being bred all the time, much closer to home - and with the difficulties placed on flights etc, first by Covid and now by the very tense situation in Eastern Europe, is it really worth taking any risks, for what looks like a nice reasonably priced purchase but may not turn out to be ?

We raise these questions because we have seen people caught out, so many times now. Like Bob says, doing plenty of research is always something anybody should be advised to do. Know what you want and why you want it; and what you'd find acceptable in seeing a litter & the way it is being reared; these things are always a better way to proceed - even with a source just up the road from yourself, never mind one that's a long way away overseas.And there are even more questions to be asked - about getting the paperwork; about proving that health testing has been done, for starters.

If you want to talk through or ask anything about what sort of pup you need and what you want to do with it, if anything, in the way of training or competitions, or simply about raising it as a great companion dog, please don't hesitate to come back and post questions on here, now you have found us. We love to hear how people get on. And see pictures of pups ! Best of luck.

I agree with what has been posted above. Here are some more considerations and questions that are more general and not about the specific dog/puppies in question, but important.


There are some very good, reputable breeders in the U.S. that produce healthy GSD that look a lot like the one in the photo.

What are you looking for in a dog(s)?

What purpose(s) do you have for the dog(s)?

If you want to breed, what are your goals (i.e., what kind of purpose(s) do you want to breed the puppies for)? GSD have wide-ranging uses and various temperaments and activity levels are good for some things and not others, and other temperaments and activity levels are good for other things, and not others. Working line vs. show line is only the beginning.

Have you bred dogs before? Are you experienced with the GSD as a breed? Know about GSD-specific health and other issues? Training? Puppy raising? Have $$$$$$ for veterinary care and stuff that can happen to the bitch and/or puppies before and after birth? Time to supervise the bitch with her puppies? Some are not good mothers for various reasons and need help/supervision to ensure the puppies live.

Lots more questions to ask, but the answers to these will help you figure out which breeder(s) to contact looking for a puppy(ies)/dog(s), and whether or not ready to take on responsibility for a litter.

Thank you. I am not a breeder and I will never want to be one. I just want to a pet or two. I used to have one but he passed away 11 years ago at age of 14. I thought I would never get one again because after he passed away, the whole family was very sad. Recently we moved to Maryland, my neighbor had a very nice B&R GSD but he was run over by a car several weeks ago. That brings back some good memories with my dog so I decided to get one. he will be a pet and I will not breed. I am looking for a nice looking one so I can keep and enjoy for the next 11-12 years.

Guess I misunderstood. I'm sorry if I offended.

There are some good breeders in your neck of the woods that produce healthy GSD puppies and will help match you to an appropriate one for your lifestyle and preferences (activity level, etc.). You can research specific breeders here and ask questions like you did (great move, by the way) so you don't get taken for a ride.

Some breeders will also recommend trainer(s)/facility(ies) in your area. Basic obedience and house manners as a puppy will save lots of grief and $$$$$$$$ later. Don't do board-and-train or drop-off training.
