TIG

Folks THIS is why we must engage the battle with the animal rights radical movement!

https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/06/german-police-dogs-sent-off-duty-after-ban-on-pulling-collars

Most of America & I suspect other nations as well have given a pass to animal rights (Peta, HSUS & all their little offshoot 501c3 orgs where people illegally run their life expenses thru the nonprofit) for the past 30-40 years. The most common comment I hear is that won't happen, there are more of us than them. Wrong wrong wrong. Numbers don't count if you are not even in the political game and the vast majority of animal owners ARE NOT.

N.B. Owners not guardian, parent, mom, dad, sibling, fur baby etc etc. Language is important and such uses need to be confronted every time you hear or see them. There is nothing instrintively wrong or unethical about being an owner and in the USA it is the legal term for the relationship. Ask any lawyer they will tell you the LAST thing you want is the transformation into guardianship - a legal status where a COURT controls your interaction with the ward (i.e. your dog) of the guardianship.

To see the future IF WE CONTINUE TO DO NOTHING, read the article. Then to open your eyes a bit wider read http://protecttheharvest.com/news/academy-awards-commercial-informs-public-about-hsus. Nitsba bit dated but take my word it has only gotten worse.

Next look up HSUS Academy or humane education. HSUS has been in the education biz for a long time. Under a previous iteration HSUS University they developed programs from pre-school! to university level. They gave these  away FREE to schools. It appears that in part they have now given many of the programs & distribution efforts over to local affiliates. Their University seemed to go away when they failed to get their agenda certified and eligible for FEDERAL educational grant money. BUT it did NOT go away - it merely morphed and expanded using a variety of names and more & more 501c's - often deliberately trying to obscure the origins & agenda.

Do you personally or does your dog club/ training organization do any public outreach at schools, fairs, farmers markets or even your own dog show (have an educational booth)?

In addition, they seem to have totally taken over the education of animal control & law enforcement (and indirectly politicians) thru their http://www.humanepro.org and once again local affiliates.

If nothing else support and promote local animal welfare associations- as long as they are not affiliated with or promoting an animal rights agenda. If they are AR that HAS  to be your line in the sand because if not now - when.

Word of warning though. Do your homework. Know what the organization you support is about & what their practices are. Two examples.

Decades ago before I left Massachusetts, we had basically solved thru education the " overpopulation"  issue (not a term I like. It is almost always not an overpopulation of animals but rather an overpopulation of irresponsible owners). But strangely humane societies and shelters still had animals to adopt. What we found at several shelters was the staff (who were PETA members) were buying litter lots of pups from puppy mills so that they would have animals to adopt out & safeguard their jobs. Sadly all these years later the problem continues. The shelter system in Massachusetts is the largest sole supplier of pet animals in the STATE AND it is totally unregulated & btw rake in hefty " adoption" fees. They IMPORT animals from a # of places including other states and from Puerto Rico from which they have imported animals with active cases of rabies! If I still lived back there I would be demanding their records and scouring their 990s!

Speaking of which, know how your state regulates such organizations. CA requires them to keep quite an array of statistics which can be very helpful to our side such as LA counting dead animals in their shelter populations to get more state money. ALWAYS ALWAYS follow the money. Do you know CA has had declining shelter populations and has had for decades. Most people don't because AR only highlights problems not successes.

2nd ex. Marin Humane Society. A highly successful " shelter" who long ago solved their " excess" pet problem. But they too still wanted animals that could be adopted. So now they cherry pick animals - usually the highly adoptable littles- from other counties. I'm ok with that IF the dog is adopted (leads to another story for another day) but problem is statistically those animals get counted twice in the state's statistics AND the relinquishing shelter can not show them as adopted so their statistics artificially are incorrect & fraudulent and continue to look bad.  BUT MARIN also IMPORTS animals from 5 FOREIGN countries including China and Mexico! Now IF our state truly does have an "excess" animal problem wtf why is that allowed. Btw they have brought in a transmissible cancer courtesy of dogs from Mexico.

I suggest you support & subscribe to http://www.humanewatch.org and http://www.naiaonline.org and http://www.saova.org .

Another good voice that keeps you up-to-date on the AR movement is http://www.thedogplace.org . A bit old fashioned in digital style & not the easiest to navigate but her heart is in the right place and well worth subscribing to. There is both a free & paid subscription. At least take the free & if you can afford it support them with a paid one.

We must also start addressing our " public servants" - city councils, state legislators, federal elected officials and most of all on all levels the bureaucrats in person & up front and let them know you are now a one issue voter. Anything that attempts to take away or limit MY rights as an animal owner will be fought tooth & nail and if they vote against our interests you will work to ensure they are defeated in the next election.

The fight is not easy and it will be long. California has been directly under attack by HSUS since 2007 both with yearly legislative bills and extremely well financed propositions. We have had some successes including defeating the election of "lightbulb" Levine (Lloyd Levine) the year after he sponsored the first HSUS bill. So yes it can be done. Animal OWNERS of all stripes went to walk his district. But I warn you it is tough & tiring. But if you want to continue sharing your life with animals, it must be done.

IF NOT NOW , WHEN?

A question about one line of logic in your argument, TIG, is that if Humane Soc or any other animal rescue charity is buying pups IN to keep adoptable numbers up (presumably these purchases by staff to retain their jobs are being supported or at least ignored by management ?), then how are we ever going to be in the position that PETA and other AR extremists apparently want, of NO PET ANIMALS ? These 2 things do not correlate.

Here in the UK, PETA has so far never succeeded in getting the grip on the public (and Government) that it seems to have achieved in the States. I don't know how influential it really is within eg RSPCA or other animal charities; it appears to be restricting its efforts far more to the anti-Hunt argument, and a majority of the British public is already with it on that one. But it is just one of the organisations / groups that oppose a lot of bad husbandry in farm animals etc, again something that finds popular support. Unsurprisingly. Or should 'we' be prepared to give bad, profiteering farm owners some sort of pass, just because of the need to ensure PETA and AR don't get an 'upper hand' ?

SOME UK rescues do 'buy in' - from Czeckia, other E European or Baltic States, Greece, Spain, Ireland etc. Not sure they are always paying for those dogs; and recent legislation here is meant to crack down on young puppies being brought in at all (although there will no doubt always be smuggling, tho' mainly for the commercial, rather than rescue, market). And dog fans ARE questioning whether this is necessary. It is often presented by rescues as in the dogs' interests - but I agree we should investigate whether it is being done more to keep jobs & funding !

As I only saw the first item you reference yesterday and as I am no expert on German affairs (hell, I know a bit about British Policing when it comes to training & use of dogs, but I don't consider myself any sort of expert on even that !) my only comment would be that most UK Police don't seem to need to resort to 'special' collars, whether pinch or electric, afaik even for 'special task force' dogs/purposes, they seem to manage fine just continuing to use check chains - and some don't even use those. Over here we have had a different attitude to such tools than our American cousins, for many years. While I am personally aware there can be some value in them, I certainly don't regard them as everyday 'essentials' in dog-training; and believe their cack-handed use by some can be harmful. Does this make me and the many others like me PETA members / targets ? No.

Alongside many of my compatriots I loudly oppose the 'babyfication' of dogs wherever I can get a word in edgewise; an increasing signature in dog-keeping in the UK which most believe stems from Americanisation anyway.

Hund, I would not ever expect logic from PETA! Also, as Tig says, "Follow the money!"

Sunny, maybe we cannot expect PETA or others necessarily to pursue a rational course, and I am not denying TIG's findings, just pointing out - as everybody should, if arguing with PETA & co - that they are flying in the face of their own philosophies if they indulge in or condone such buying-in & cherry-picking activities.

Over here (and I suspect this will be true of other countries also) we don't just have to watch what PETA gets up to; we have enough problems with 'our' criminals. They don't need PETA to steal pets for puppy farming, to import pups from other countries in scruffy vans, to abuse and neglect those animals. Say what you like about PETA, most of the ordinary people who sign up to the organisation here are just public like you, me & TIG, they would not dream of hurting or exploiting dogs.
