Diarrhea and Heat - Page 1

Is there an particular reason why a bitch going into season might get diarrhea?  It's the same color as her regular poop, and it smells the same (but worse).

She's healthy, active, happy, playful, etc. Just that when she goes into heat, she gets diarrhea.

Yes, I have a vet appointment for her, but a few days away, as long as I can keep her from getting dehydrated.

Skipped a meal and now started in on the canned pumpkin.  If not slowed down by tomorrow, I'll replace some of her food with plain boiled rice.

She gets Wysong Fundamentals (kibble) twice a day, plus a large Fresh Kisses dental treat once a day, and a pig ear once a day. No recalls on anything.

I thought maybe the pig ears, but not China ingredient or product. And if it were the pig ears this would happen times other than when she's in heat. But, some of them have been "slimy," so on the off chance they're contributory, no pig ears for awhile.

She's not been to anyone else's facilities, boarded, etc., or to the dog park recently.

I understand the various "regular" reasons for doggie runs.  My concern is that pretty much every time she goes into heat she gets diarrhea.

 

 

Pig ears are very high in fat. Too much fat in the diet can cause diarrhea.
Maybe that combined with the hormone changes of being in heat is causing the diarrhea?

Have never heard of being in season triggering diarrhea, but not being a breeder, I don't have a lot of experience with this!

Every dog's system is different, just like people. When I read the title to your post, I assumed you meant temperature and not breeding readiness. There is a link between high temperatures and diarrhea.

What kind of kiarrhea. If the stools are wetter than thick paste, i.e. are liquid squirts, you should not feed for 24 to 36 hours. Allow all the water she wants. Then feed rice with a canned food rather than kibble which is harder to digest. Something like a lamb and rice canned food. Add some table spoons of boiled rice to this and mix it in. Also you should give endosorb which can be purchased without a prescription. It will slow things down. Canned pumpkin is also good as is Olewo carrots. Eliminate everything else such as those treats.

What I would be more concerned about is that she did not want to eat. Also I would want to know what is her temperature. She could be experiencing a false pregnancy.

I'm trying to think back to the years when I used to be around the intact bitches of my mentor's Show/breeding kennel (in more recent times we only ever had one un-neutered bitch at a time among the work dogs). Can't recall any of the girls being particularly prone to diarrhea when they were on heat, may have happened once or twice. The only thing I can think of apart from a higher temperature connection is that there may be some swelling of internal organs associated with the season, and if so there may be some extra pressure going on inside the dogs guts which could result in loose stools at that time ? Would not have to be more than a fraction of an inch, possibly !

Klossbruhe - Her diarrhea was liquid, as in pancake batter consistency, with a few partly digested pieces of kibble (ugh). That's why I skipped her a meal and her first feeding was smaller than usual, with canned pumpkin added. Since she wasn't lethargic or acting like she felt poorly, I wasn't inclined to resort to rice right away because her kibble is rice and chicken with added minerals, vitamins, etc. https://www.wysong.net/fundamentals    She was not happy skipping a meal.

 

Today, her poop was normal. Gave her canned pumpkin by itself as her treat for doing her business outside as a precaution. And she's her usual crabby, hard-headed "I'm in heat" self LOL

 

bE sure to watch for temperature (can indicate a pyo in process) and I would give her plain pedialyte. I mix pedialyte 50/50 with water. Usually helps.

if it only occurs during heat, I guess one could assume it's due to chemical/hormonal changes that she doesn't tolerate well.

not sure how that would be diagnosed except by tests before and comparable tests during, probably by a specialist vet.

have you discussed an anti-diarrrhea treatment with your vet?

I find that my dog's stool becomes loose during times of high heat, so his activity is restricted during the day and he gets smaller meals and a lunch.

The dog's poop is a little soft this a.m., but no real diarrhea, so more pumpkin for a.m. pee-poo reward.

Yup, she's G - R - U - M - P - Y today LOL This is normal for her when she's in season. A couple of male dogs being walked (on leashes) in front of the house spent longer than usual time sniffing HA HA.

Koots- do you mean your make dog goes into season, or are you referring to temperature? LOL

Gscat - haha, high temps. We've had temps in the 40's (celcius) this summer, and consistently in the mid 30's. We gave our dog a teaspoon of Metamucil (original, no flavouring) in his food when he had loose stool but pumpkin is better, just hard to get sometimes here.
