Frozen Semen Questions - Page 1

Good morning

I am entertaining the option of doing a frozen semen AI breeding. Currently conducting my Due Diligence so any thoughts, experiences, etc is greatly appreciated:

1. General success rates based on personal experiences?
2. From reading, litter size is said to be reduced by 20% - 30%, is this accurate based on experience? (M = 5 yrs, normal litter sizes in previous live cover breedings, F 3.5 yrs, first breeding)
3. How do I find a shipper? I have vets lined up on both sides but have no idea on the logistics or even where to begin.

Again, any additional advice or suggestions is certainly appreciated.

no personal experience with frozen.

a friend has done a couple of chilled, which required shipping in a special container of course.

he had it surgically implanted. used a vet that is a reproductive specialist. I think one litter was 8 and another 10.

if I can get in touch with him, I will ask how/who shipped.

edit to ad after rereading your post. not sure I would want to spend that kind of money on an unproven female. but that's just me.

I'm also considering frozen with an unproven female, in part due to covid, and in part due to specific goals and the distances that would be required to travel to take or ship my bitch to a suitable stud.

I've not done AI before, so I'll be very interested in the responses to this thread, as well.

Here in Europe, the one who sends the semen has to look for the transport, you just have to look for a good vet. I appreciated bringing semen to do it with my dog, but ... I have spoken with people and it is not easy to be successful, the vet told me 60% success, with the people I have spoken they even speak less ...

My wife had one of her dogs AI with the semen of a dog that died 20 plus years a go. The vet who did all work, including having the semen stored is local. The litter produced 2 males, she lost a ton of money with all the costs associated with getting a female pregnant and the virus hitting around that time.

How long is frozen semen supposed to last and still be usable ? 20 years seems a long time to me, but having not used AI or been party to its use, I'm completely ignorant. (Would not even know, without googling, how long human sperm is viable for those trying to have kids !) - I know mammoths & things have kept well in ice for 100s of thousands of years, but would not expect their semen to be anything but dead.

Hund, the sperm I am told was still good, obviously, it produce two puppies, motility was at 60% I was just now informed. If properly stored, it can last forever.
Someone else I know got a puppy from a 10% motility, but, I dont know the particulars of that specific case.

Thanks to all for your responses. I had a consult with my vet on Tuesday where we discussed the particulars surrounding the process itself and the likely "Best Case" scenarios. Based on our discussion I have decided to stay with my original plan of a live cover for this particular breeding and will possibly look at Frozen Semen A.I. for a breeding next year. I still intend on purchasing frozen semen and storing it for future use.

BLUF - A.I. via Frozen Semen is the least successful method of the various A.I methods. The data I had read (i.e. success rates [40% - 60%], litter size [>20% - %30 less than live cover], etc) was confirmed by my vet as relatively accurate based on her experience.

Before you take a semen you must ask bank of semen numbers of fertility and movement they show you at papers. At my breed we have frozen semen from 1977 and is OK. You can make insemination one way and other way is with surgery if you want to have big success you must make surgery. Propably for transport you must speak with Bank that keep the frozen semen

Don´t know much about this topic but I recently saw a breeding where they have used frozen semen from a dog born 1986, three dogs in that litter, quite interesting to see old bloodlines came back to life that way, here is the combination,
