SV Hip Ratings

 The German A stamp: Hip quality rating. Three German ratings, A1, A2, A3, and A6 for a rating on a German Pedigree but done in a foreign country recognized by the SV.

A1: Normal NON deficient hips
A2: Fast Normal. Near normal hips.
A3: Noch Zugelassen. Still allowed for breeding, Fair hips.
A6: Dog's hips rated in a foreign country approved by the SV.  x-rayed outside of Germany

 a4 - is basically mild-moderate
a5 would be considered severe

Yes; the OP needs to find out which 'approved' country the hips were assessed in, and ask how they were classed or scored. E.G. if the hips were done in the UK, they will have been scored under the KC/BVA scheme and given a total numbered rating, the lower the better. If dealt with in some other countries they may just have been given a Pass (they would not have been granted the 'a' stamp if given a Fail). In the USA, of course, this will be their OFA rating.

Honestly do not see what is confusing about the question, or any responses to it.
If there are papers on a dog which say they have a German 'a' stamp, then the Germans/SV have awarded this because the dog's results are compliant with their rules. So obviously they won't be awarding that to any dog which has been considered in another country and NOT found 'Normal or Near-Normal'.

If I had a dog with an 'ausland' notation, I would be curious as to what was said about the hips in detail when they were done; the SV might not tell you those 'details of findings'; but it is normally possible to see in which country the hips were X-rayed. Of course, if the OP or anyone else in this position does not wish to know about that degree of detail, and is simply happy with the idea that their dog has Normal or Near-Normal hips, that is fine, and up to them.

If you DO ask the question however, it does give you a way to cross-check that the papers and the 'a' stamp are genuine ...
