Just curious, I know that top ranked dogs are busy in the breeding department. How often can they breed to different bitches? Does the owner try to space it out, or are they really not THAT busy.

The top males are "very" busy as I understand it. The SV regulates the amount of breedings per annum I believe to 60 breedings including repeat breedings. In the SV Magazine, you will sometimes see a "freeze" on a particular stud, because he has surpassed his quota. If the breeder does not heed the guideline, I believe the stud dog can be removed from the accepted stud list. I guess, this will not be one of our worries. Ha!

I'm sorry GSDfan. I now recall where I got this information from. Leerburg video has a tape with Walter Martin that explains alot of things regarding the regulations surrounding the pink papers, breeding etc. In this tape he explains the role of the stud dog. It is not the greatest tape in the world speaking audio/visually and is probably outdated but it gives alot of background if you keep replaying it. Sunny

Hi, in Germany a stud can be at service 65 times per annum, and annother 35 times outside of Germany. Now picture this : A VA stud costs here in Germany around 800- 900 Euros.(equals around 1000$) Do that for 2 years and your house is payed for.... After that 2 years sell him for around 200000 Euros and your retierment is taken care of..... Man, that would be nice.... LOL.....and good luck of getting one of these wonderdogs....LOL

What are the regulations here in America for a stud dog?

by GSDrcool on 14 February 2005 - 09:02

Don't these bitches come in heat all at around nearly the same time of the year? So how do they plan out these matings. Or is is that the bitches come into heat independently. There may be times when more than one mating takes place in a day. And that involving different bitches. Not a bad idea to be born as a stud dog! LOL!

Hi GSDrcool, i guess you were joking with your question that the bitches get all in heat at the same ! I`m not to well informed, but for all i know is that you have to keep a stud-book. Every stud has to be on record and the owner of the sire has to issue a "Deckbescheinigung" (i guess you could translate that as a "stud certificate"). There are exact regulations in place on how many studs can be done in a certain timeframe. On top of that the owner, if he is concerned about bloodlines and the outcome of progeny will not allow every bitch to be serviced by his sire. I personelly know a breeder who turns down bitches, if he is not completly sure that the bloodlines are matching. One can only shake his head, that there are breeders out there that promote a 5time inbreeding in 1 bitch. I can hardly imagine how difficult it is going to be to find the right breeding partner for that offspring !!! You all have a good day!!
