I am purchasing a puppy in Germany, and I live here in the states. It is the first time I have imported a puppy. I have alittle trouble with the language barrier, but the guy seems reputable enough. He is a small breeder. My question is, what should I expect for paperwork from the SV? Does the breeder submit the registration with my name? Or does he send to me, and I submit? Im not sure what I should expect form him. Any advice form experience?
Thanks

Hucklebuck, assuming the pup is in the 8 week old range, the breeder will have to wait a few months until he/she receives the papers from the SV (depending on how backed-up they are)
Once the papers are recieved he/she will sign ownership of the dog over to you and mail you the papers. When you have received them you will need to get a copy of the Bescheinigung (proof of transfer of ownership)from the SV to submit to AKC to prove ownership "IF" you intend on AKC registering your pup.
Here is a link to the SV for their requirements and Bescheinigung information.

They do speak English so don't worry, just remember the 6 hour time difference if you call them.
Good Luck

I've imported two Pups from Germany.
The first one arrived in the US at age 10 weeks,
the Ahnentafel arrived two months later.
The second one was due to ship on 9/15, but
because of 9/11 neither the Breeder nor I felt confident to ship than,
so the Pup was shipped a month later.
The SV Papers got there a week thereafter.
Both Breeders had submitted my Information to the SV, (my Name was already on the Ahnentafel when it arrived).
When I contacted Sabine Leib at the SV
(Fax 0821 74002-902;
eMail: akc@schaeferhunde.de) about the AKC Bescheinigung,
all she had to do is confirm my Info.
When inquiring about an AKC Bescheinigung, all you really need is the pups Name and Zuchtbuchnummer (SZ Number), Sabine speaks English and would be happy to answer any and all questions.
Because I requested the Bescheinigung via eMail (and Credit Card) it arrived in my mailbox only 7 days later.
(In 2003 the AKC Bescheinigung cost 15.50 Euro + 8.18 Euro for shipping,
figure around 30 Euros)
You could already contact the AKC and request they send you a Foreign Registration Application Form.
Last I heard it cost $50 to apply for registration with the AKC for your import Pup.
Make a copy of the Ahnentafel and send the COPY (no need to get the copy certified) to the AKC with the AKC Bescheinigung and the two 6x4 Photographs of the Pup.
