Sunny, in 1979, my 4 yo Australian shep/husky x was diagnosed with hw, only after multiple and a variety of tests and concurred with exray. He was living on 1/3 lung capacity according to my vet...it took six months but we saved him with unconventional treatment since the conventional treatment would have killed him, according to my vet. He did experimental treatment t help me save this dog, and I was blessed with 4 more years with that great dog.
Back in those days, there was no preventative, but it was recommended to 'test' for hw every 6 months, which I did without fail. The problem is that conventional tests didn't show 'positive' and only when my dog became ill with coughing and then passing out, that I found a vet who went the extra for my beloved dog and who saved him by out of the box treatment.

Wow, Joan, that is scary!
I had no idea the test could be inaccurate!

So very sorry for your loss, how heart breaking.
Sounds like the cobwebs could be some form of lung disease and scar tissue from that disease.
