I used to use the type of dog bed in this photo, but both Eska and Star liked to chew up beds, and the darn things are EXPENSIVE!
Caption for this is; Star, quit hogging the bed!
Hundmutter, the dog in my sig always slept by the front door. I could never put anything but the thinnest of mats there, or it would interfere with opening the door!
As she got old and thin and arthritic, several dog lovers said I was being mean to here. So, I bought an expensive dog bed, and she refused to use it! I also had a nice thick rug beside my bed, and she wouldn't sleep on that, either.
The front door of the house was the entrance to the kitchen, so I tried blocking off the kitchen when I went to bed. Instead of sleeping on the cold, hard tile floor in the kitchen, I found her sleeping on the cold, hard tile floor in the bathroom... After that, I gave UP!!

Funny, aren't they ? Sheila does use the beds, and rugs, she knows they are there; but mostly when she wants to go right off to deep sleep, she prefers the shower. She will go off and lie on one of her beds when shut out of the bathroom because I want to use it, but as soon as the tray is dry, she goes back.
Although she is old (at least 12, maybe more) she certainly is not thin; and she does have a huge coat, so that may both protect her, and be the reason she wants a cooler surface. As far as I know her background, she has never been a kennel dog, so it isn't about being acclimatised to being outside on concrete or anything like that.
