Hello everyone, I´m new to the web site and saw that there was a forum with different topics and the E-Collar topic caught my eye since I just attended Gold Coast K-9 shock collar 3 day training course. I can see the majority of people in this forum have a good understanding what an E-Collar is supposed to be used for. I think I can bring new light to the conversation. I have been a Police K-9 handler for 11 years and I have had the pleasure of handling multiple top dogs in my career, which I have never had to use an E-Collar on any of my K-9 partners until now. I have had my new partner for 7 months now and all I have to say is WOW, what a hand full. He is a 3 year Belgian Malinois named Sniper, he is built for speed and intensity. Anyone that knows the breed understands what I’m saying. I have to say this dog is like driving a Ferrari; he is quick and gets to work in a fast manner (biting people). The only issue I have with Sniper is his verbal out of the bite. He has selective hearing and refuses to let go when I command him to. I was at a loss when it comes to certification (which this was the first time I have ever failed in 11 years), because he would give me the big paw when I attempted to verbal out him of the bite. My unit and I attempted everything under the sun to curve Snipers verbal out issues, we even attempted the shock collar, gradually working our way up until we achieved our verbal out, which never came. We were at a loss for words when he maxed out the collar and he continued to bite through the pain. Keep in mind; this is a Dogtra collar, not a cheap imitation. We then had some outside trainers attempt to help with this issue (from Europe),and they administered some less than nice methods that I have never seen preformed before, let alone heard before (utilizing the Dutch wipe). After witnessing the exercise, I put a stop to it because I felt that it was abusive and it was adding to the problem. It’s because of these types of practices (Dutch wipe), my dog now has a high threshold for pain, and any type of correction I attempt to administer is significantly less than what my partner is used to. Sniper will continue to fight through the pain no matter what is done to him. Using the shock collar in the correct manner (one around the neck, and one around the waist) gave me a new avenue, which allows me and my dog to become successful in the attempt to condition him to let go when commanded. One my dog is not being physically abused and we can both be proud of our accomplishments that we had made together in a short period of time. Understand, I cannot utilize the collar during certifications, but in time, the hope is that my partner will clearly understand what is being asked of him (which has worked for the month).
I hope this adds to the conversation, because the shock collar is a great tool if it is used in the correct manner. Thanks for reading and I look forward to any remarks. James

I mean if we are going to use examples of abuse using an ecollar to condemn all people using ecollars, shouldn't we do the same with any training technique?
If you don't want to use an ecollar - then don't. Personally, I can think of a few worse things that are being sold - like flexi-leads, or choke chains.

as to why the current web pages / instruction sheets
accompanying the products still do not mention any use
or positioning except that of the neck ? If this use is
so well established ?
I would hazard a guess that the people who make e-collars already know their products are not PC to many. The minute someone sees a collar on a dogs flanks the "They are SHOCKING that dogs TESTICLES" comments start. I routinely see/hear this claim from people, that they heard, saw, their second cousin twice removed heard or saw someone shocking their dogs testicles. The people who know how to use collars can figure out how to use one on the waist if needed, without the manufacturer advertising it that way.
If you want more than a guess though I would suggest contacting the manufacturer and asking them why they don't advertise it that way.

I was just trying to give some INSIGHT, as to WHY, and HOW some people use them.
WHAT they achieve by using the collar in this manner, WHO is using them, and BTW , I WAS ONLY TRYING TO PROVIDE ANSWERS TO SOME THAT DID NOT TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK THE USE UP THEMSELVES,
PLUS, I wanted to know myself and found the answers and training rather interesting!!!
It was not about the use of E-Collar per se, but the "unusual use" on the flank I was trying to address

just HOW would you throw him to the ground just by grabbing
his testicles ? It might hurt him, but the only thing flying through
the air would be the person trying to do that !
